J.J. MURPHY.
It was on this day a year ago (Friday, 6th Sept, 2019) that J.J. Murphy, one of the Club’s Vice Presidents died after a short illness at the age of 86. J.J. and his family were involved in the Club going away back to the forties and fifties. He, together with his brothers Thomas and Oliver played with the football teams of that era. Later he was instrumental in starting Card playing in the Club and organised regular sessions in places like Benner’s Hotel before we got a home of our own in Connolly Park in 1989.
His sons John and Michael (current proprietors of Celsius Mensware, who recently moved their business to 5 Castle Street) also played as did his grandchildren, notably Frankie and currently Matthew Browne who is a member of this year’s Minor Football team and Aisling plays with our U12 girls. Matthew is also involved in videoing our Senior games and, along with his sister Aisling regularly operates our scoreboard as well as keeping a regular check around the Club on all that is happening during the current pandemic.
A special Mass was celebrated in Our Lady and St. Brendan’s Church last Friday evening to commemorate J.J’s anniversary.
