Everyone in the Club was saddened at the news on last Sunday morning of the death of Timmy McMahon, one of the Club’s great players, mentors and administrators. Timmy’s family connections goes back to the very start when his father-in-law, John Foley was one of the founding members of the Club in 1917. Like many more of his generation Timmy kept the Club alive during what is termed ‘the barren years’.
He played on that great 1952 team that reached the Co. Championship semi final, the first Rock team to achieve that feat in fifteen years, a team that were most unlucky not to have gone all the way that year.
When his playing days were over he continued his commitment to the Club, holding many positions on the Club Committee.
His involvement didn’t stop there as he immersed himself as trainer and selector of many teams. This came to a climax when, with Jackie Power and Paddy Scanlon, he was a selector with the 1973 SF team, when finally those ‘barren years’ were consigned to history with that famous Co. Championship win on that sunny October Sunday, which he often claimed to be the highlight of his sporting career.
He was a current Vice President of the Club and in February 2008 he was inducted into the Club’s Hall of Fame, along with his good friends, Sean Murphy, Chucky O’Connell and the late Jimmy Barry.
Funeral Arrangements: Reposing at Hogans Funeral Home today Monday (Feb 20th) from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Followed by Removal with Austin Stacks Guard of Honour to St. Johns Church. Funeral Mass at 10am Tuesday (Feb 21st). May he Rest in Peace.
