Stacks Seniors Book Semi Final Spot!

September 3, 2023 By Elma Nix

Intermediate Club Championship QF:  FT Austin Stacks 1-18 Glenflesk 0-12.
Austin Stacks travelled to Glenflesk on Saturday afternoon (Sept 2nd) very much the underdogs following their disappointing defeat to Castleisland in Round 3 just six days earlier.  The home side carrying the favourites tag following their victory over Fossa at the same competition stage.  Austin Stacks management rang the changes and were able to welcome back from injury and include on this week’s starting line-up Michael O’Donnell, Michael O’Gara, Joey Nagle and Jack Morgan.  Stacks got off to a great start with Sean Quilter shooting two beautiful points from distance within the opening three minutes.  Glenflesk and East Kerry’s Darragh Roche, pointed from play before Michael O’Donnell struck for his first of the day from play.  The sides exchanged points ours a free by Michael O’Donnell to leave the score after ten minutes of fast flowing football Glenflesk 0-2 Austin Stacks 0-4.  The sides exchanged scores three times in the next 20 minutes our scorers, Michael O’Donnell, Shane O’Callaghan & Michael O’Gara all from play, before Sean Quilter pointed a free in injury time to leave the Half Time Score Austin Stacks 0-8 Glenflesk 0-5.

Glenflesk came out all guns blazing after half time and had reduced the Stacks lead to the minimum with two excellent points from play by Tommy Bowler and Killian O’Sullivan.  Shane O’Callaghan steadied the ship with our first point of the second half after two minutes.  The sides exchanged points once more, ours from the boot of Cillian Litchfield.   Then the turning point of the game came when team Captain, Shane O’Callaghan, who had given his marker a tumultuous day throughout, in typical ‘Calla’ style rounded the keeper and his low shot found the back of the net.  Austin Stacks 1-10 Glenflesk 0-9.  Glenflesk responded immediately with a point from play but this was quickly cancelled out by a point from play by the hardworking Sean Quilter.  Donagh Mc Kivergan, added his name to the point scorers in the 39th minute,  before that same man again, Shane O’Callaghan, chipped in with another from play in the 44th minute.  The home side hit Stacks for three points in a row in the next six minutes, 2 converted frees by Darragh Roche and one from play from Ian Roche to leave the scoreboard Glenflesk 0-12 Austin Stacks 1-13 with ten minutes remaining.  Then came another twist in the tale as Glenflesk were reduced to fourteen men following a second yellow card for Darragh Roche.  Austin Stacks controlled the game expertly in the remaining ten minutes, managing to hold Glenflesk scoreless while adding five more points to their total tally, Micheal O’Donnell 0-3 (2 frees) and 2 excellent points from play by substitute David Mannix.  FT Austin Stacks 1-18 Glenflesk 0-12.

Well done to Austin Stacks Players and Management on reaching the Semi Final stages of this year’s Intermediate Club Championship and thanks to everyone who made the journey to Glenflesk to support of the team.  After the game Shane O Callaghan was deservedly awarded the Celsius Menswear MOTM award.
A word of thanks also to Austin Stacks LGFA U10 girls who participated in the mini games V Glenflesk U10s at the half time interval. It was a great opportunity for the girls to showcase their football talent and they didn’t disappoint.  Well done girls.
