HURLING: St. Pats (East Kerry) 1-7; Austin Stacks 2-16.
This semi final of the South Kerry JH Championship played in Kilcummin on this Saturday evening (22nd Sept) was in doubt for three quarters of the game. At that stage the sides could not be separated (it was 1-6 to 0-9). At half time we were three points in arrears (1-4 to 0-4) after having a very shaky first half by our standards. We could and should have been a goal up inside the first minute but it went to the wrong side of the post and that was the first of seven wides that we had in the first half to just two for St. Pats. Our first half scores came from Colm Ó Giollagáin (2) and one each from two of our half backs, Cillian O’Riordan and Andrew Morrissey.
Half way into the second half we had drawn level (1-6 to 0-9), scoring five points to two during this quarter. Three of those points came again from Colm Ó Giollagáin with Kieran McCaughley and Paul Daly also on target.
However it was during the final quarter that we really showed our metal. In an eleven minute spell we went on to score a further 2-7 while holding the opposition scoreless. Daniel Teahan, with a point in the 47th minute got the ball rolling, and then in the 48th and 50th minutes this game was really put to bed with two goals on the trot. The first came when a brilliant clearance from his defence by Eoghan McKivergan found Ronan Gilsenan and Pip’s perfect pass found Paul Daly who shot to the roof of the net. Ronan was involved again in the second goal when his high shot in was finished to the net by Peter O’Regan. Three points from Paul Daly (one from a sixty five), two from Colm Ó Giollagáin and our final score by Andrew Morrissey saw off a very determined performance by St. Pats who got the last score of the game in the 58th minute.
We now meet Duagh the final which is fixed for Saturday week (6th Oct) with the throw-in time and venue yet to be confirmed.
