SENIOR HURLING: Kilmoyley 1-12; Austin Stacks 0-9.
The home side emerged winners in this opening game of the season at Lerrig last Wednesday evening (30th March)- the first round of the North Kerry Intermediate Hurling League.
John McCarthy opened the scoring after six minutes with a pointed free. Then three minutes later Kilmoyley opened their account with a point from play.
In the space of a minute we fired over three brilliant points from play, one from Liam Cleary and two by Paul Daly.
By the end of the first quarter Kilmoyley, with two points, reduced our lead to one.
We then responded with three John McCarthy points, two from frees and one from a sixty five.
Just before half time Kilmoyley added one to leave us ahead by three at the interval (0-7 to 0-4).
We were now facing a very stiff breeze in the second half with rain beginning to fall and the home side took full advantage.
A defensive lapse ten minutes after the resumption allowed the opposition in for the only goal of the game and this proved to be the turning point.
Our two points in that second half came from frees by Ronan Gilsenan in the 36th minute and John McCarthy in the 46th minute and this was in fact the last score of the game.
So overall team mentors Ger Scollard, Brian Neenan and Brendan O’Regan can be reasonably pleased with this first outing, taking all things into consideration.
It was good to see Danny Maguire making his Club debut and he looked sharp throughout.
It was also good to see Peter Doyle making a welcome return after a long layoff through injury.
