Senior Club Notes 23rd May, 2023.

May 23, 2023 By Martin Collins

SENIOR FOOTBALL Dingle 2-12; Austin Stacks 1-14

Our trip to Dingle on last Sunday afternoon (21st May) for  the  round 7 Co. League game looked like a certain win for our lads when we had a commanding lead at half time (0-10 to 0-4) and still had that six points lead (1-14 to 0-11) as the game entered the final ten minutes. But the home side fought back adding two goals and a point while keeping us scoreless and come away with a one point win at the end.

The result leaves us in dangerous territory on the Co. League table – third from bottom with four more rounds to play – at home to Desmonds (our next game on the week-end after next) and Kilcummin and away to Milltown and Gneeveguilla.

Team: Ben Quilter, Colm Browne, Barry Shanahan, Joey Nagle, Paul O’Sullivan, Armin Heinrich, Jack Murphy, Greg Horan (1-0), Michael O’Donnell (0-2 – one free), Eoghan Carroll, Fiachna Mangan (0-1 free), Donagh McKivergan (0-1), Seán Quilter (0-7 – four frees), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Jordan Kissane (0-2).

Subs used: Jack O’Shea (ht), Shane Bastible (55m), Conor Myers (59m).

Our thanks to Elma and Ciara Nix for their brilliant coverage of the game on Twitter for us.

B FOOTBALL. Austin Stacks 0-8; Duagh 3-16.

Visitors Duagh had a comfortable win in Connolly Park on this Sunday afternoon (21st May) in the final round of this season Co. League (Div 5A). The weekend results mean that they, along with table-toppers, Lispole, will be in Division 4 of the Co. League next season. But it’s still not clear as to the status of ourselves and Ballylongford for the coming season.

Team:  TJ Hogan, Ruairí O’Connell, John Murphy (Capt), Greg Scanlon, Evan Foley, Ciarán O’Connell, Joe Reidy, Shane Carroll (0-1 free), Dean Rusk (0-1), Cillian Litchfield, Gearóid Sheehan, Seán Moynihan, Noah Townsend (0-2), Pa McCarthy (0-1), Damien Hogan (0-3 – frees).

Subs used: Dean Scanlon (21m), Dara Barry Walsh (40m).

Club PRO: Martin Collins in typical pose on the sideline in Connolly Park.

U21 FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-12; South Kerry 2-10.

Connolly Park was the venue on last Wednesday evening (17th May) for the opening round of this season’s knock-out Co. Championship. And after a brilliant display by both sides we just came up short at the end going down by the narrowest of margins. A point each (ours from a Jordan Kissane free) inside the opening two minutes was followed quickly by a South Kerry goal to give them an early three points lead. But we recovered well and were slightly the better side for the remainder of the half going in at the break just one point in arrears (1-6 to 0-8). Jordan added two more points from frees with Damien Hogan also scoring from two frees with the remaining points from play by Shane Bastible (2) and Jack Murphy.

The visitors then dominated the opening quarter of the second half scoring a goal and four points without reply to leave them ahead by double scores at that stage (2-10 to 0-8).But our boys rallied well during the final quarter holding the opposition scoreless while adding 1-4 to their tally – a goal and three points coming from Damien Hogan with Cillian Litchfield on target also.

Team: Ben Quilter, Ruairí O’Connell, Joey Nagle, Luke Casey, Jack Murphy (0-1), Armin Heinrich (Capt), Dean Rusk, Colm Browne, Cillian Litchfield (0-1), Noah Townsend, Jordan Kissane (0-3 frees), Shane Bastible (0-2), Donnacha Sayers, Damien Hogan (1-5 – five frees), Evan Foley.

Subs used: Joe Reidy 23m), Thomas Deregee (27m), Michael Tansley (55m).

Well done to Team Manager, Denis Sayers and his brilliant back-up team of TJ Hogan, Martin Courtney, Greg Horan, Damien Ryall, Mikey Collins and Kevin Hanafin can be well satisfied with our display against a strong 10 Club Divisional side.

The one and only time we have won the U20/21 Co. Championship in 2002 we had three members of this season’s management team  on the winning team  – TJ Hogan, Martin Courtney and Mikey Collins.

THE C TEAM: We did have two more round to play in the Co. League – away to O’Rahillys (week-end of 28th May) but they have now withdrawn from the competition and at home to Laune Rangers on w/e 18th June.

THE D TEAM: With just one round played so far (a brilliant win against Scartaglin (5-14 to 1-1) our D team have still two back games to play both away against Duagh and Beaufort with two more rounds after that – at home to Tarbert on the weekend after next and away to Clounmacon on w/e 18th June.
