Saturday 30th August 2025
Austin Stacks v Rathmore
Venue: Austin Stacks Park
Throw-in 7pm
Match Report by Tommy Naughton
Austin Stacks’ journey in this year’s Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship came to an end on Saturday at a windswept Austin Stacks Park, as Rathmore staged a dramatic late comeback to secure their place in the last four.
First Half
Austin Stacks made the most of the strong wind at their backs in the opening half, racing into an early lead. Paddy Lane opened the scoring within the first minute and followed up with a two-pointer just three minutes later. Cian Purcell added another point before raising the green flag after a well-worked move involving David Fitzmaurice, giving the Rockies a commanding 1-04 to 0-00 lead after sixteen minutes.
Greg Horan added another point for Stacks, but despite their dominance, wides began to mount and they failed to add to their tally for the remainder of the half. Rathmore took advantage in the closing stages, with John Moynihan, Ciaran Collins, and Alan Dineen all pointing to reduce the deficit to five at the break.
Half Time: Austin Stacks 1-05 Rathmore 0-03
Second Half
Rathmore started the second half brightly, with Shane Ryan converting a two-pointer free within three minutes of the restart. Paddy Lane responded for Stacks, but Brendan O’Keeffe’s two-pointer brought Rathmore right back into contention, narrowing the gap to just two points.
Austin Stacks steadied themselves with points from Cian Purcell, Daniel Kirby, and a Paddy Lane free, but Rathmore struck back in the fourteenth minute when Brian Friel found the net. Friel added another point moments later, leaving just one between the sides.
Paddy Lane stepped up for Stacks, kicking three unanswered points to restore a four-point cushion as the game entered its final ten minutes. However, Rathmore finished strongly, outscoring their opponents by 1-04 to 0-01 in the closing stages.
Mark Ryan and Mark Reen chipped in with points for Rathmore, and although Lane added another for Stacks, the game’s turning point came when Rathmore were awarded a penalty. Ciaran Collins made no mistake from the spot, levelling the contest with three minutes remaining.
Paul Murphy and a Shane Ryan free in the dying moments sealed the win for Rathmore, who advance to the semi-finals at the expense of Austin Stacks.
