Men’s County League Div 1 Round 8
Sunday 25th May 2025
Austin Stacks v Glenflesk
Venue; Connolly Park
Throw-in; 2-00pm
Report by Tommy Naughton

Austin Stacks bounced back from last weeks defeat against Spa Killarney with a hard earned victory over Glenflesk in Connolly Park on Sunday.
The home side started brightly aided by a strong wind and were 1-01 up after four minutes after a point from Conor Horan and a goal from Shane O’Callaghan when he flicked a long pass from Conor Horan passed the advancing keeper. Glenflesk pulled a point back after five minutes which was to be their only score until the twentieth minute as The Rockies took full advantage of the elements.
Points from Ferdia O’Brien, Greg Horan and two from Shane O’Callaghan had stacks 1-05 to 0-01 up after seventeen minutes. A Glenflesk free was followed by another five unanswered scores from the Stacks which started with a two pointer from Greg Horan. Conor Horan kicked his second of the day before Ferdia O’Brien got his second from a free and the sharp shooter Shane Callaghan brought his tally to 1-03for the opening half. The final score in the first half saw Glenflesk kick over a two point free.
Half Time; Austin Stacks 1-10 Glenflesk 0-04
Austin Stacks against got the opening two scores of the half with both coming from Ferdia O’Brien with the first from a free and the second from open play. Glenflesk were then given a lifeline when an unforced turnover by the Stacks saw the visitors break quickly down the field to bring the gap back to eight points after just three minutes of the half.
Points were exchange between the sides with Shane O’Callaghan again scoring for the home side. Ferdia O’Brien kicked over another close range free before a free from Glenflesk had the sore at 1-14 to 1-06 with fifteen minutes remaining.
Glenflesk then hit a purple patch starting with a two point free followed by a point from play and then when they were awarded a close range free the Stacks defence switched off. The free was taken quickly and before anyone reacted the umpire was waving the green flag and the gap all of a sudden was only two points with eight minutes left.
Greg Horan extended the Stacks lead but a two pointer from play by Glenflesk had the minimum between the sides. As Glenflesk pushed for the leveller they were caught on the break twice with substitutes Ryan O’Driscoll and Daniel Kirby finishing the scoring to give the home side a three-point win.
Austin Stacks will be delighted to get the win after losing last week but looking at this game they will surly learn that decision making has a huge baring on a game and on another day the poor individual decisions that were made when the game was in the melting pot could be very costly.

Ask Acorn U21 County Football Championship Quarter Final
Thursday 22nd May 2025
Kerins O’Rahillys v Austin Stacks
Venue; Strand Road
Throw-in; 7-00pm
Report by Tommy Naughton

Austin Stacks are into the Semi Final stage of the Ask Acorn U21 County Championship thanks to an 11 point win against our Tralee rivals Kerins O’Rahilly’s.
Daniel Kirby opened the scoring within the first minute with the opening attack of the game. Three minutes later the sides were level thanks to a Darragh O’Connor free but the Rockies were back in front seconds later when Paddy Lane kicked over. A driving run through the O’Rahillys defence saw Ben Murphy slot the ball over from just inside the 21-yard line to double the visitors lead.
Gearóid Meehan pulled one back for the home side before Ronan Caroll punched over from close range after he picked up the ball outside the two point zone and drifted passed a number of defenders. The game was level when a two point from the O’Rahilly’s dangerman Tomas Kennedy sailed over.
Gavin Casey kicked over after cutting inside from the left wing to get the Stacks back in front and the gap was three when Ronan Carroll kicked a huge two pointer from open play. The Stacks should have raised the green flag in the quarter hour mark when Ben Murphy offloaded to Damien Hogan but his effort was save by Sean Collins.
Back to back points from O’Rahilly’s Breandan Meehan and Darragh O’Connor had the minimum between the sides with seven minutes left in the half. Austin Stacks then hit a purple patch scoring 2-01 in a three minute spell. Ryan O’Driscoll scored the opening goal when he danced along the end line and fired low to the net, this was quickly followed by a free from Paddy Lane and when Ryan O’Driscoll set up Damien Hogan he made no mistake this time from close range to give the Rockies an eight point lead.
Odhran Kerins got on the scoresheet for O’Rahillys before Ryan O’Driscoll kicked the final score of the opening half.
Half Time; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-07 Austin Stacks 2-09
Jake Foley got the opening score of the second half for the home side which was cancelled out when man of the match Ronan Carroll slotted over a free. Thomas Kennedy kicked another long range point before both sides were reduced to 14 men. First O’Rahillys had Mattew Higgins sidelined for ten minutes when he picked up a black card and the Austin Stacks Jake Murphy picked up his second yellow card.
Darragh O’Connor pulled another point back before Stacks substitute Cormac Bastible kicked over from close range. Stacks superior fitness now began to tell and another substitute Cillian Litchfield was the next to score. Cian Dillane from play, a Donnacha Sayers free and a second from Daniel Kirby made it five unanswered points to leave the stacks ahead by twelve points with just five minutes remaining.
Jake Foley with the home sides second two pointer of the game was quickly followed by points from Sean og Brosnan and another from Ronan Carroll. Darragh O’Connor kicked the final score for the home side with a close range free.
Austin Stacks will be delighted with the win and even more happier with having twelve different scorers on the night including all six starting forwards getting on the scoresheet. Stacks will face East Kerry in the semi final next Thursday night May 29th with the time and venue to be confirmed.
