Death of Liam Shanahan RIP
By Tim Slattery.
All in Austin Stacks and the wider community were saddened with the passing of Liam one of the great supporters of the Club down through the years.
Liam was born in September 1929 and grew up in Stacks Villas lived in St Johns Park and finally Monalee.
In his younger days played Club games between teams from Upper and Lower Rock Street,Stacks Villas and Oakpark.
Liam won a Minor League Competition with Stacks Villas with team mates like
Michael “Chucky” O’Connell,Joe Ryan,Jerry “Pluggy” Moriarty & Pat “Skef” Sheehy to name but a few,the team were never presented with the Cup or Medals.
Liam played with the Senior Hurlers in the early 1950s with players like Tunney Galvin,Joe Mulchinock,Kevin Barry,Frank King & Eamon “Gal” Slattery.
Liams favourite players were Mick O’Connell for his high fielding and Mikey Sheehy for his Pure Class.
Liam was also a diehard follower of Kerry Football & Garveys Tralee Warriors and could be seen at most games either in Austin Stack Park or Tralee Sports Complex.
Away from football Liam worked in Latchfords Bakery as a salesman and travelled all over West Kerry delivering their produce to the local shops.
All at Austin Stacks GAA Club extends its deepest sympathy to all of Liams family and friends . May he rest in peace.

Kerry GAA Credit Union County League Division 1
Dr Crokes v Austin Stacks
Venue; Lewis Road Killarney
Report by Tommy Naughton

Austin Stacks remain unbeaten after the opening four games in this seasons of the County League after they picked up a point away against the current League and County Champions Dr Crokes.
After a frantic start to the game that saw both teams’ turnover the ball in the attacking third on numerous occasions the opening score came from a two-point free from Billy Courtney for the Crokes after 5 minutes.
The only goal of the game came from the very next play when Cian Purcell managed to get a shot away from just inside the penalty area and when the Crokes keeper Bryan O’Shea blocked his initial shot Purcell was quickest to react to force the rebound home.
Colm Brown gave Stacks a two point lead before a Cian McMahon free had the minimum between the sides after twenty minutes. A Conor Horan point from a free was quickly followed by two quick points for Crokes by Alex Hennigan and Cian McMahon to bring the sides level again with five minutes remaining in the opening half.
Conor Horan kicked his second of the game before a driving run at the Crokes defense saw Jack O’Shea punch over from a tight angle as we headed into injury time. The final score of the half came from the boot of Brian Looney for Dr Crokes.
HALF TIME; Dr Crokes 0-06 Austin Stacks 1-04
Austin Stacks introduced Michael O’Donnell and Paul O’Sullivan for Brendan O’Sullivan and Armin Heinrich at half time. Just like in the first half the opening score came from a two point free from Billy Courtney to put the home side ahead by one for the first time since the opening exchanges of the first half. Dr Crokes could have gone further ahead when Cian McMahon intercepted a kick out but his goal bound attempt was saved by Austin Stacks keeper Ben Quilter.
Stacks were back in-front within three minutes with points from the hard working Gearoid Fitzgerald and Cian Purcell. A Micheal Burns free had us level again as the game flowed up and down the field at an incredible pace with neither side giving an inch.
Another Conor Horan point from a free had stacks ahead by one, but a two pointer from play by Liam Randles had the home side back in front. Micheal Burns kicked over his second free and then Dr Crokes were three points ahead when Mike Casey kicked over from just inside the 21 yard line with thirteen minutes gone in the second half.
Darragh O’Brien replaced Gearoid Fitzgerald as Stacks looked to close the three point gap which they did brilliantly with four unanswered points in the next two minutes. Michael O’Donnel got the first when he out-jumped his marker to punch over from a crowded goalmouth. This was followed by a huge two-point score from Cian Purcell to bring the sides level and then Micheal O’Donnel got his second with a great score from the left wing.
The score of the game came with ten minutes remaining when from a Stacks kickout they held possession inside their own half under sever pressure from the Dr Crokes Press. Jack O’Shea picked up the ball and broke through the first line of defence and a after a quick one-two Jack handed off the ball off to the onrushing Sean og Brosnan to fire over and put Stacks two points ahead.
Micheal Burns kicked over his third point before Brian Looney scored and for the fifth time the sides were level again. Amazingly this score came in the 22nd minute of the second half and it was to be the last score of the game.
Dr Crokes were reduced to fourteen men with four minutes remaining after Evan Looney picked up his second yellow card with Austin Stacks bringing on Conor Myers for Joe Reidy. The Rockies will feel they should have added to the scoreline and taken the win with three great chances in the dying minutes but it wasn’t to be on this occasion and both teams went home with a point each to leave Austin Stacks at the top of Division 1 and Dr Crokes in third place just two points behind.

Bs and Cs go to limit to keep show on the road
Both our junior teams were stretched to the absolute limit in the county league at the weekend as the minimum number of players (13 in C game/15 in B game) togged and got their respective games.

Kerry GAA Credit Union County League Division 7B
Austin Stacks C v Ballydonoghue B
Venue; Connolly Park

Result
Austin Stacks C 3-9 Ballydonoghue B 3-17
With a multitude of factors conspiring against both sides a massive amount of credit is due to both sets of players for their efforts in keeping both games competitive despite the odds being stacked firmly against them. Massive credit is due to players who played for both teams on both days namely Evan Foley, Dan O’Rourke and Dara Moriarty.
With Ballydonoghue having played their A game on Friday night, it was always going to be an uphill struggle for our C team to get a result on Saturday lunchtime. A mixture of young and old man the fourth commendably with the evergreen Oliver Lata answering the call late between the sticks. Others to impress were Jesse O’Sullivan who took a big knock late on as well as the flying Ciaran Kavanagh and Barry Nagle in defense. Tom McLoughin once again was an absolute rock at the back in trying circumstances.
Joe Looby did not shirk from an unusual midfield berth putting in a man of the match performance with the ageless Joe Kinsella on the forty also vying for that accolade. Up from 14 points was a good tally with the pinpoint accuracy of David Courtney passing linking well with the impressive Padraig Breen time and time again.
The final word, however, goes to surely another record for William Kirby who in lining out at fifty years of age never looked out of place. This week we travel to Spa on Friday evening.
Team-Oliver Lata, Barry Nagle, Ciaran Kavanagh, Tom McLoughlin, Evan Foley, Dan O’Rourke, Joe Looby, Joe Kinsella, Padraig Breen, David Courtney, William Kirby, Dara Moriarty, Jesse O’Sullivan.

Kerry GAA Credit Union County League Division 5
Kilgarvan v Austin Stacks B
Venue; Kilgarvan

Result
Kilgarvan 3-11 Austin Stacks B 0-14
Fifteen brave men travelled to Kilgarvan on Sunday evening stymied by a host of injuries and unavailability of players. Cormac Bastible who would play for minor on Monday was the star with a multitude and variety of scores that indicate a big future for the Bastible baby. Indeed, it was a very interesting day for Dad Batt as he looked on as Shane went down with a heavy injury just before half time only to be replaced by the eldest brother Seamus who travelled as selector for the team.
Another soldier Andrew Morrissey must be congratulated for his club commitment as he stepped up to the plate to fill the gap competently at corner back. Great to see Dara Barry Walsh back in action too after his sabbatical. The team battled bravely throughout, never dropping their heads with very little between the teams. Well done to all concerned. This week we play host to Lispole on Sunday afternoon.
Team-Brian Horgan, Andrew Morrissey, John Murphy, Donnacha Horgan, Dara Barry Walsh, Ruairi O’Connell, Evan Foley. Thomas Derege, Sean Heaslip, Daniel O’Rourke, Shane Bastible, Greg Scanlan, Dara Moriarty, Cormac Bastible, Pat McCarthy.
Man of the Match-Ruairi O’Connell.
