Kenmare 1-19
Austin Stacks 2-16
We got out of Fr Breen with a point on Saturday night after a cracking match that could have gone either way against a very strong Kenmare side. Momentum shifted several times over the course of the 60 minutes and with seconds on the clock we trailed by a point only for Eoghan Carroll to produce a fantastic moment of guts and leadership to cut through the defence and level the game with the last kick.
We started brilliantly with Joe and Mike very influential on both kick outs, both landing early 2 pointers to give us a strong 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes. The County League champions grew into the game led by their All Star centre forward and by half time had edged ahead by the minimum, 0-9 to 0-8. We could have considered ourselves fortunate after O’Shea missed 2 2 point frees in the first period you would normally expect him to land. The Casey brothers were our other stand out players in the half.
Kenmare produced a brilliant set piece from the throw in resulting in a close range goal to put us 4 behind. We showed great composure and led by the magnificent Joe O’Connor we were level again within 10 minutes through scores from another Joe, Mike and Ronan Carroll. Armin Heinrichs influence on the game was growing and he was driving the team forward as we seemed to get stronger as the game went on, the team improved by injections from the bench. Cian Purcell goaled to put us in front just as the game entered the fourth quarter after a smart turnover high up the pitch and precise build up from Daniel Kirby and Armin. Conor Horan nailed a free from the narrowest of angles and Joe threw over a beauty with his left in this period also as things seemed to shifting in our direction. The twists weren’t finished yet however as Kenmare went back in front after a two point free before Ryan O’Driscoll marked his Championship debut with a palmed goal after another turnover in a dangerous area to put us in the driving seat on the home stretch. A beauty from Dylan Casey put us three in front before Kenmare stormed back into it and levelled the game with another two point free after a breach. From the resulting kick out they poured forward after a mix up on our kick out and took a point when a goal was on offer. We looked dead and buried at this point before Eoghan saved our bacon.
All considered, the travelling Rock supporters must have been delighted with the excellent resilience and attitude shown by our squad against one of the top contenders in their back garden. We are through to the next round, whether we are top or second depends on how Kenmare get on against Templenoe this Sunday at 2pm in Templenoe. The draw takes place on Sunday after the last round at 5pm.
