The 7th October 1928 (90 years ago today) also fell on a Sunday and it was on this day that we won our first ever Co. SF Co. Championship title as a separate Club (up until then the three Tralee Clubs were grouped together as a Tralee team when competing in the SF Co. Championship). Our opponents that day were our neighbours Kerins O’Rahillys, although in 1928 both Clubs had yet to be known by their current names as the following week’s Kerryman Headline indicated – ‘’Rock Street Wins – County Football Final – Strand Street’s Plucky Fight – Victors’ Strong Finish in Stirring Contest – Morning’s Rain Hampers Attendance’’.
We didn’t have a very good first half at the end of which we trailed by four points to two. But we were totally dominant in the second period, outscoring the opposition by 3-2 to 0-3 which gave us a six points victory at the end (3-4 to 0-7).
Team: William McSweeney, Tommy Barrett, Joe Barrett (Capt) (1-1), Bobby ‘Rucky’ Kelly, Tim ‘Roundy’ Landers, Dan Ryan, Mick Healy, John Joe ‘Purty’ Landers, Denis ‘Rory’ O’Connell, Ned ‘Pedlar’ Sweeney (1-0), Miko Doyle (0-2 frees), Jimmy Kelter, Jimmy Barrett (1-0), James Baily (0-1), Pat ‘Mullins’ Curtin.
Subs: Tom O’Connor, Tadgh Drummond, Mick Landers, Bill Gorman.
