It was on this date (Tuesday, 17th September 1968) 50 years ago that great sadness hit Tralee with news of the untimely death of Dolly Mulchinock following a traffic accident while on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. Dolly, together with her brother Joe, ran the very popular Grocery Shop at the top of the Rock which was synonymous with the Stacks Club down the years. Before we acquired our own permanent home in Connolly Park Mulchinock’s Shop was the place where all Rock teams would congregate when going out of town for away games.
In her young days Dolly was a member of a very good Rock St. Camogie team during the late 1920s/early 1930s (see page 153 of Centenary Book). Two days before the tragic accident her beloved Hurlers had a very good win against Lixnaw in the Quarter Final of the Co. Championship. And on the following Sunday Dolly was to have taken in the Kerry-Down All Ireland Final in Croke Park, making her journey back home from Lourdes, via Dublin to do so.
