ANDY MC ALLEN.
Ten years ago on this date (12th May 2009) the whole community was shocked when news came through of the sudden death of Andy McAllen at the young age of 27. Andy had just returned to the Club after being away for a few years when he resided in Limerick. And he was back again performing with the hurlers and the footballers. He was one of the great Juvenile players of his day, winning every competition at U12, U14 and U16, including the U14 Féile in 1996. That group of players came within a whisker of winning the Co. MF Championship in 1999 – going down to a star-studded South Kerry team in the final by just one point (1-13 to 1-12). Andy came on as a sub that day five minutes before half time and in the space of two minutes had the ball in the back of the South Kerry net for our only goal of the game.
Those teams that Andy excelled in comprised some of the greatest players of this modern era, players like Daniel Bohan, Mikey Collins, Martin Courtney, Brian Dennehy, TJ Hogan, Darragh Long, Martin Moriarty and the one man who is still playing at the top of his game, Kieran Donaghy.
Here is video footage of Andrew playing in the 1999 Minor Co League final – he scores a goal & celebrates at 4.25mins in.
