SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-13; St. Michaels Foilmore 1-10.
Round 9 of the Co. League played in Connolly Park on last Sunday afternoon (19th Aug)
was the classic game of two halves, with Foilmore scoring 1-7 to 0-4 in the first half and our lads scoring 1-9 to 0-3 in the second half, with the strong breeze, which favoured the visitors in the first half, a significant factor.
St. Michaels opened the scoring in the 3rd minute and after David Mannix equalized from a free in the 8th minute, following a foul on Shane Carroll, it was the visitors again, five minutes later, who latched on to a breaking ball in the goalmouth and goaled.
In the next twelve minutes matters were fairly even with points from Darragh O’Brien (2) and David Mannix for us, to two for the opposition.
With Kieran Donaghy and Paul O’Donoghue winning midfield we had most of the possession but found scores hard to come by due in part to that tricky strong wind. In the last four minutes of the half the visitors were clinical in attack, adding four points before the break to give them a two goals lead at half time (1-7 to 0-4).
We now had that favourable wind in the second half and with early points from Darragh O’Brien and William Kirby and a well taken goal by Darragh Long we had reduced the deficit to just one point after seven minutes. Michaels first point of the half came in the 40th minute but then we were back on level terms by the end of the third quarter (1-8 each), with two points by William Kirby and David Mannix (free).
The visitors took the lead again in the 48th minute, but between then and the end we were in complete control, putting over five from five different players (Shane Carroll, Denis Mac, Cliffy, Darragh Long and a David Mannix free), before the opposition got their third score of the half deep in added time.
With two more rounds to go it is still mathematically possible for us to reach the final, but of course it depends hugely on other results going our way. Our final two games are away to Rathmore (last weekend of September) and at home to Gneeveguilla (on a date to be confirmed).

CONGRATULATIONS: to Wayne and Mags Quillinan on the birth of their second child (Jamie), a baby brother for Sophie.
SENIOR HURLING: The semi final of the Co. League is scheduled to go ahead in Fossa on this Wednesday evening (22nd Aug) at 6.45 with Kilgarvan the opposition.
Lixnaw await the winners in the Final, at Lixnaw, on next Wednesday (29th Aug).
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-17; John Mitchels 2-13 (aet).
In one of the most exciting games seen in Connolly Park for a long time this Co. Championship Quarter final (Molyneaux Cup) went to extra time and after a pulsating 82 minutes of outstanding football by both sides it was two of our younger players, who came on as substitutes, that combined for the winning score in the 81st minute – Kyle Fitzgibbon with a good run, feeding Danny Carroll who was coolness personified when he put over from a difficult angle.
Mitchels had a brilliant opener and, with penetrating runs through our defence, led by 1-4 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter (our two coming from Fiachna Mangan – great to have Fiachna back again after spending the summer abroad – and Gary O’Connor).
We then came into the game and, with two pointed frees by Theo Diggin and David Courtney and four from play by Breandán Caball, Fiachna Mangan, Eoin Colgan and Sean Purcell, led by one at half time (0-8 to 1-4).
We kept up that momentum early in the second half, stretching our lead to six by the 38th minute with points from play by Sean Purcell, Conor Jordan and Gazza O’Connor and a wonderful goal by David Courtney.
It looked as if we would push on from there and close out the game but Mitchels, as we know of old, will never give in and for the rest of the second half they dominated play, scoring 1-5 to 0-2 for us (Eamon McAllen and Sean Purcell) which left the sides deadlocked at the end of 60 minutes (1-13 to 2-10).
Within 50 seconds of the start of extra time we had gone two up with Sean Purcell and Danny Carroll on target. Mitchels scored one point before the break to leave us just one up at half time in extra time (1-15 to 2-11).
Three minutes into the final half Gearoid McCann pointed to put us two clear, but, within three minutes, Mitchels had drawn level again for the 6th time in the game and then ,when it looked as if the game might have to go to a replay, came that late Danny Carroll winner.

Our C team began their defence of the Barrett Cup with a potentially difficult assignment at home against Kerins O’Rahillys on last Wednesday (15th Aug) and, after shaking off two come backs by the Strand Road boys, went on to win with ten points to spare.
We were well in command during the first half and lead by 0-7 to 0-3 as half time approached but Rahillys got through for a goal which cut our lead to just one at the break.
Then, after we increased our lead to three with early second half points by Danny Carroll and Eamon McAllen, the visitors drew level for the first time in the game with a 42nd minute goal. This turned out to be their only score of the second half. With two more points from Danny Carroll the game was still in the balance until Frankie Murphy’s 52nd minute goal (his 2nd in as many days – he also scored with the U21s the previous evening) gave us a five points breather and we took complete control after that, adding five more points, to give us a comprehensive win in the end.
Playing well as a unit there were also some brilliant individual performances, most notably from Shane Durran, Tom McLoughlin, Shane Walsh, Timmy Lynch, Danny Carroll, Padraig Breen, Eamon McAllen and from Man of the Match, Conor Jordan.
It was also good to see Sean Murphy and Thomas Moore back in the fold after an absence.
One other feature of the game, one we can’t recall happening before, our three half backs got on the score sheet in the same game.

WEDDING BELLS: Congratulations to Sinead Moriarty and Kenneth Leahy who were married recently. Kenneth was one of the stalwarts of that great C team of the early noughties, making the number 5 spot his own for twelve consecutive seasons (1999 to 2010) and winning four Co. Championships in a row (2002 to 2005 – captain in 2003) and four Co. League medals (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005). Everyone in the Club wish Kenneth and Sinead (who, herself, rarely missed a match during that period) every health and happiness for the future.

Missing a number of key players from their first round success, the visitors were unable to cope with a very accomplished display by our boys in the last 16 of the County Club Championship played in ideal conditions in Connolly Park on last Tuesday (14th Aug).
At half time we lead by 1-10 to 0-2 – our goal coming in the 12th minute from the ever improving Seamus Bastible coming up from his wing back position.
The second half was equally one way where we added a further 1-9 to 0-1 for the opposition – our goal coming from substitute Frankie Murphy in the 50th minute.
Apart from the result, the manner of our display will be most pleasing to Wayne and his backroom team (Sean Power, John Tobin and Ger Mannix).
Kyle Fitzgibbon and Don Quinn picked up early injuries and we wish them a speedy recovery.

BINGO: The Bingo session will continue on this and every Saturday night at 8.30pm in our Clubrooms.
CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions will take place as usual on Monday and Thursday nights at 9.30.
LOTTO: Last Monday ‘s (20th Aug) Jackpot, worth €1,500, was not won. The winning numbers were 15, 17, 20, 22.
The €100 prize was won by Margaret Lacey, c/o Charlie Healy; with €20 each going to Mike Lonergan, c/o Eddie O’Sullivan; Brendan O’Riordan, c/o John O’Riordan, Brendan O’Hara, c/o Joe Smith; and Eamon Mahony and Christine Guerin, both c/o The Club.
Next Monday’s Jackpot will be worth €1,600.
ANNIVERSARY: We remember at this time, David O’Lehan, one of the Club’s outstanding footballers of that time, who died 20 years ago, on the 22nd August 1992 .
SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is offered to the families of Michael Devereaux, Sunday’s Well; Anne Quirke (nee Hayden), Stack’s Villas; Patrick O’Sullivan, Knockmoyle and late of Ballyarkane, Castlemaine; George Keane, Derrymore and Caherslee (brother-in-law of former Club Chairman, the late Jimmy Barry); and Anne Donnelly, Cloondara, Oakpark and late of Moyderwell who died during the past week.
