Last Sunday January 13th, there was an excellent turnout for the unveiling of the commemorative plaque in honour of the late Moss Slattery (from Urban Terrace, Rock St.) who died suddenly while playing with the SF team in a Co. League game in Castleisland on 1st April 1962. Family, supporters and playing colleagues were in attendance on Sunday afternoon to witness the unveiling by Club President, Brendan Dowling and Peadar Dunworth, nephew of the late Moss.
Speakers included Brendan and Peadar as well as Club Chairman, Aidan O’Connor, Club Secretary, Catherine Ryan and John Barry who was in Castleisland on that sad and fateful day. Also present at Sunday’s ceremony was Michael Chucky O’Connell who was one of the team mentors in Castleisland that day, over fifty years ago. Host and one of the organizers of the event, Timmy Sheehan thanked everyone who attended and who helped with organization.
The plaque reads: ” In Remembrance of Maurice “Moss” Slattery who died, aged 24, wearing his beloved Black & Amber, against Castleisland on April 1st 1962. An outstanding dual player, he won a County Minor Hurling Championship in 1955. He was Secretary of the Club in 1959 and 1960. We are proud and honoured on the 50th anniversary of his death to remember him for his wonderful contribution to the Club…April 1st 2012.”
