Milestones – Compiled by Kerry O’Shea

December 14, 2008 By Austin Stacks Admin

1879: Austin Stack was born.

1904: Austin Stack captains Kerry to All-Ireland final success. The Kingdom defeat Dublin Kickhams by 0-5 to 0-2 in a low-scoring decider.

1917: The first steps towards launching a GAA club in Rock Street were taken when Christy Barrett bought a set of jerseys.

1921: Austin Stacks won their first piece of silverware when they won the County Junior Championship for the first time.

1924: Rock Street’s Bill Landers, Jimmy Baily, Jakcie Ryan, Joe Barrett and Jerry Moriarty help Kerry to All-Ireland success over Dublin

1926: The County Board make a momentous decision to split Tralee into three separate areas as far as football is concerned.

1928: After less than two years as a side competing in the county senior championship, Austin Stacks claim a unique County Championship success in both football and hurling. The footballers defeat O’Rahilly’s, as they were then known, by 3-4 to 0-7, while the hurlers record a 4-2 to 0-2 victory over John Mitchels.

1929: Joe Barrett captains Kerry to All-Ireland success over Kildare, 1-8 to 1-5, and brought the Sam Maguire Cup to Rock Street. Austin Stacks retained the County Senior Hurling Championship title after a 5-2 to 0-6 win over John Mitchels.

Austin Stack, patriot, republican and sportsman died at 50 years of age.

1930: The club formally adopted the name Austin Stacks Hurling and Football Club, Rock Street, and another piece of silverware came to the Rock when they defeated O’Rahilly’s 4-4 to 2-5 in the County SFC final.

1931: Austin Stacks won their third County Championship title in four years, defeating John Mitchels by 2-7 to 1-3 in the decider.

In what was later regarded by historians as a very important overture to heal the rift and divisions within the county caused by the Civil War, Joe Barrett declined the honour of Captaining Kerry for the third time and he nominated Con Brosnan.

1932: Another magnificent year for Austin Stacks. Joe Barrett captained Kerry for the second time when the Kingdom accounted for Mayo to claim the Sam Maguire Cup for the fourth time in a row; the final score was 2-7 to 2-4.

Stacks win yet another County SFC title defeating North Kerry by a narrow margin in the decider.

1933: Austin Stacks reach yet another County final, but this time went under to Kerins O’Rahilly’s on a 5-5 to 0-6 scoreline.

1936: Title number six arrived when Austin Stacks defeated old rivals Kerins O’Rahilly’s 0-6 to 0-4

1937: Miko Doyle became the second Austin Stacks man to captain Kerry following the Kingdom’s victory over Cavan in a replay. John Joe Landers and Micko Doyle were goal scorers in Kerry’s 4-4 to 1-7 success.

John Joe Landers became joint Secretary of the Kerry County Board.

1945: Fr Michael Galvin became Club President, a position he still holds.

1947: Dan Ryan refereed the All-Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Cork.

1952: Joe Barrett, the man who captained Kerry to All-Ireland success in 1929 and 1932 died at the young age of 52.

Austin Stacks qualified for the County Football Championship semi-finals but succumbed to Kenmare in a low-scoring game.

1955: Our Minor Hurlers recorded a memorable 9-4 to 2-2 win over Ballyheigue. Jimmy Murphy was the victorious captain.

Tadgh Crowley became Secretary of the Kerry County Board.

1961: John Barry helped Kerry to a memorable All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship win over London.

1962: Joe Joe Barrett played a key role in Kerry’s All-Ireland victory over Roscommon.

Moss Slattery, who was Club Secretary at the time, died suddenly on the field while playing senior football for the club in Castleisland.

1967: Austin Stacks claimed their second County Minor Hurling title following a controversial tie with Causeway. The game ended in a draw and was never replayed. Both sides claimed the title. A certain Dick Spring was a member of the squad on that momentous occasion.

1968: The club suffered a heartbreaking 1-6 to 1-5 defeat to Crotta O’Neill’s in the County Senior Hurling Championship. A last-chance Christy McQuinn ‘65 was controversially signalled wide.

Tadgh Crowley became Treasurer of the Munster Council.

1969: St Brendan’s Church, which is built on the site of Joanie O’Connell’s field in Rock Street, the club’s former home was consecrated by the then Bishop of Kerry, Dr Eamon Casey.

1969: The club suffered more heartbreak on the hurling front when the senior hurlers went under to Killarney.  On a positive front, the club’s minor footballers claimed their first title following a 3-12 to 2-5 success over Kenmare. Future senior stars Ger O’Keeffe and Ger Power and future club chairman George Dineen were on the victorious side.

John O’Keeffe, Ger O’Keeffe and Tony O’Keeffe helped St Brendan’s Killarney to a memorable All-Ireland Colleges success over St Mary’s of Galway.

1971: The Club entered negotiations with Tralee UDC which eventually led to the purchase of Connolly Park the following year.

The CWS Bacon Factory, which employed many members of the Austin Stacks club, ceased to trade despite frantic efforts locally to reverse the decision.

1973: A great year for the club. The Bishop Moynihan Cup arrived back to the Rock when the Stacks record a 2-8 to 1-6 victory over West Kerry’s Na hAishaigh, and just for good measure, the County Senior Football League title was also annexed.

1974: In what became known as the battle of muddy Moyvane, the senior footballers lost their crown after 0-12 to 1-6 loss to Feale Rangers. In hurling, our hurlers are defeated by Abbeydorney in the decider.

1975: Another fantastic year for the club. Mikey Sheehy, John O’Keeffe and Ger O’Keeffe led Kerry to All-Ireland success over Dublin, while more County Senior Championship silverware came our way following a 1-7 to 1-4 win over Mid Kerry in a replayed decider.

The death took place of Joe Mulchinock, who was Club secretary and Co Board delegate for many years.

On the domestic scene, Austin Stacks defeated Kenmare by 1-14 to 0-7 to retain their County SFC title. The year finished on a brighter note when the club made a Munster breakthrough after success is recorded over St Finbarr’s of Cork in the provincial decider.

1977: Jimmy Barry became Chairman of the Club at the Annual Convention. In March, the Club’s senior footballers recorded a fantastic 1-13 to 2-7 win over Ballerin of Derry in the All-Ireland Club decider

1979: Mikey Sheehy equalled the record for the highest individual score in an All-Ireland final when he scored 2-6 against Dublin. This record which Mikey shares with his great friend Jimmy Keaveney still stands.

The club claimed its eighth County SFC title with a 1-11 to 0-9 success over Castleisland.

Former Club chairman Frank King became Chairman of the Kerry County Board.

1980: Ger Power became the first Austin Stacks man since Micko Doyle in 1937 to captain Kerry following the Kingdom’s 1-9 to 1-6 victory over Roscommon, while Austin Stacks surrendered their County Senior Championship title following a defeat to Feale Rangers.

The minor footballers, captained by Michael Counihan, recorded a 2-7 to 0-4 success over Killarney to claim the County championship title for the second time

1985: Brendan Dowling became Club Chairman. Plans were drawn to build a clubhouse and function’s room.
