Austin Stacks v Glenflesk
Venue; Connolly Park
Throw-in; 2-00pm
Report by Tommy Naughton
Austin Stacks bounced back from last weeks defeat against Spa Killarney with a hard earned victory over Glenflesk in Connolly Park on Sunday.
The home side started brightly aided by a strong wind and were 1-01 up after four minutes after a point from Conor Horan and a goal from Shane O’Callaghan when he flicked a long pass from Conor Horan passed the advancing keeper. Glenflesk pulled a point back after five minutes which was to be their only score until the twentieth minute as The Rockies took full advantage of the elements.
Points from Ferdia O’Brien, Greg Horan and two from Shane O’Callaghan had stacks 1-05 to 0-01 up after seventeen minutes. A Glenflesk free was followed by another five unanswered scores from the Stacks which started with a two pointer from Greg Horan. Conor Horan kicked his second of the day before Ferdia O’Brien got his second from a free and the sharp shooter Shane Callaghan brought his tally to 1-03for the opening half. The final score in the first half saw Glenflesk kick over a two point free.
Half Time; Austin Stacks 1-10 Glenflesk 0-04
Austin Stacks against got the opening two scores of the half with both coming from Ferdia O’Brien with the first from a free and the second from open play. Glenflesk were then given a lifeline when an unforced turnover by the Stacks saw the visitors break quickly down the field to bring the gap back to eight points after just three minutes of the half.
Points were exchange between the sides with Shane O’Callaghan again scoring for the home side. Ferdia O’Brien kicked over another close range free before a free from Glenflesk had the sore at 1-14 to 1-06 with fifteen minutes remaining.
Glenflesk then hit a purple patch starting with a two point free followed by a point from play and then when they were awarded a close range free the Stacks defence switched off. The free was taken quickly and before anyone reacted the umpire was waving the green flag and the gap all of a sudden was only two points with eight minutes left.
Greg Horan extended the Stacks lead but a two pointer from play by Glenflesk had the minimum between the sides. As Glenflesk pushed for the leveller they were caught on the break twice with substitutes Ryan O’Driscoll and Daniel Kirby finishing the scoring to give the home side a three-point win.
Austin Stacks will be delighted to get the win after losing last week but looking at this game they will surly learn that decision making has a huge baring on a game and on another day the poor individual decisions that were made when the game was in the melting pot could be very costly.
