FAOI 8: The Mícheál Quirke Under 8 Go Games Blitzes continue on Wednesday @ 6.30pm in Páirc Uí hÉalaithe, Ballyrickard. The Rockmen continue to do us proud!
UNDER 6 & 8 & 10: Our Under 6, Under 8 and Under 10 boys will be in action as usual on Sunday next in Cathair Sailí @ 11am. We expect the usual good turn-out!
PEIL FAOI 12: Training continues for the Under 12s on Mondays and on Thursdays at 6pm in Caherslee. They were unsuccessful in their recent outing v An Daingean but these fine players will be improving with experience…..taithí a dhéanann máistreacht!
ACADAMH NA gCAILÍNÍ: (i) UNDER 10 GIRLS: On a day when the sun was splitting the heavens at Cathair Sailí the Acadamh welcomed the girls from Abbeydorney for an U10 game, due to shortage of numbers they included a few U12 girls, the game was played at about twenty minutes each way and was ably refereed by our own Chris Flannery who we would like to thank for his effort. Our U10 girls showed us all how much they have learnt over the past few months, some of the passing, positioning and marking displayed by these girls was way ahead of their years, this was their first game of the year, but they proved they are much more ready than we thought they were. No names are mentioned here as every one of these girls excelled themselves.
The Acadamh would like to thank the girls and mentors from Abbeydorney for coming and we would like to repeat again that they are welcome any time. (ii) UNDER 8 GIRLS: Our U8 girls had a small sided game against Abbeydorney as well, four of our girls played five of theirs in a well fought game with good ball movement by both teams, this game was refereed by our own Catriona Collins who also played well throughout. (iii) UNDER 6 GIRLS: The U6 girls trained and played games between themselves. (iv) UNDER 12 GIRLS: The U12s hosted Listowel in a league preliminary match on Sunday evening. Listowel are a very impressive team and they presented a fine display of football. However the 36 players who represented Austin Stacks did so with aplomb and throughout the match some excellent linking play was displayed. The players showed that they are well able to drive with the ball and each individual gave an honest effort. Listowel were the victors and Austin Stack Club girls wish them well this season and thank them for a sporting game. (v) BIRTHDAYS: The Acadamh would like to wish “breithlá sona” to Ciara Nix (seven on Sat. 30th May), Ellen Ní Chonaill/O’Connell (ten on Sun. 31st May), Maeve O’Sullivan (eight on Mon. 1st June) and Lauren Quinn (ten on Mon. 1st June).
MNÁ NA CARRAIGE: The Mums’ Active group took advantage of the beautiful sunshine on Sunday morning and moved their activities to Caherslee to show the academy players that vigorous physical activity is not the preserve of the young. An hour of tag games, relay races, hoola hoop and parachute games, to name but a few, made football training look like the easy option. The activity bug has bitten this group very hard and plans are afoot to continue to meet and train on a regular basis. Indeed plans are being hatched to launch a ‘mature man’ version of Gaelic football! Hence the academy will provide a lifelong pathway through football. More on this later! Mná na Carraige, a dhuine! Ní fios cad ‘tá romhainn amach sa chlub seo!!
IOMÁNAÍOCHT: Congrats to Kerry hurler and Tralee juvenile coach John Griffin and to his fellow players on their outstanding win over Derry in the Christy Ring Cup competition. They now face the might of Carlow and victory will give them a place in the final. Go n-éirí go geal leo! Níor chaill fear an mhisnigh riamh é!
UNDER 14B: (i) Training for the B boys will take place with Dónal, John and Michael in Connolly Park on Wednesdays and on Fridays from 6pm to 7pm. (ii) On Friday next we’ll challenge Ballymac. (iii) On Sunday last we played Spá in a good challenge match. Our lads led throughout the game, were 7 points up at the sos, but took the eye off the leather in the final quarter and allowed the Cill Airne boys to win. However, it’s to be noted that we suffered a few injuries le linn an chluiche and had some of our players helping out the understrength opposition. Overall, a good workout! In the first half D.Walsh, A.Moynihan and D.O’Brien played with Spá and sa dara leath they had K.Flanagan, J.O’Donnell and M.Lynch. An fhoireann: Claudio Dema (cúl báire); Seán Hurley(1-0), Aidan McQuinn, Dylan Harnett; John Nolan, Breandán Caball, Enda Jordan; Kieran Flanagan(0-1), Niall Carroll-Cane; Timmy Murphy(0-1), Brian Hill(1-2), Cian Casey; Jack O’Donnell(1-1), Craig Corcoran(0-1), Mike Lynch(1-0). Na fir ionaid: Richard Hurley(o-1), Antóin Ó Muimhneacháin(0-1), Dáithí Ó Briain, Jordan Ó Catháin, Dáithí Breathnach(1-0).
UNDER 14A: Some of our Under 14A players are training hard with the Tralee area team on Fridays. This district team had a very good victory over Feale Rangers but lost to Ciarraí Thoir. All other A players are encouraged to work on their own to keep their skills in order until A-team training will again resume! And the County League was won by An Daingean whom we had earlier defeated by 8 points! Bhuadar ar an nGaeltacht le farasbarr 4 chúilín!
IOMÁNAÍOCHT FAOI 16/17/18: Hurling training will take place as usual at 5.30pm in Connolly Park on this Friday. Well done to the lads who showed their worth with the big boys on Friday last in the drawn game v Laune Rangers and to Dylan Ó Croidheáin a scóráil cuilín gleoite.
PEIL FAOI 16: (i) Training as usual. (ii) County league (Roinn 1): Round 1 ~ Wednesday 22nd June. (iii) County championship: Wednesday 19th August.
LONG AGO: When was the GAA founded? When was Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League) founded? (1884/1893). The founders of the GAA and the Gaelic League were of one mind on many things! Historian Séamus Mac Annaidh tells us that “together the GAA and the Gaelic League raised the consciousness among ordinary people across the country of what it meant to be Irish. Both organisations were implicitly separatist in that they stressed that Ireland was a different country, with a different culture, and not merely an English province or colony. This cultural nationalism took many forms and engaged the minds of many of the new generation of writers and poets writing in both English and Irish. While the GAA’s founders, Michael Cusack and Maurice Davin, wanted to preserve and cultivate their country’s national games, the Conradh na Gaeilge founders (Douglas Hyde and Eoin Mac Néill) wanted to popularize ‘Irish’ entertainments such as fiddling, piping, dancing, reciting poetry and listening to lectures and the preservation of Irish as the national language of the country and the extension of its use as the spoken tongue”.
