Juvenile Notes 20ú Márta

March 27, 2009 By Brian Caball

IOMÁNAÍOCHT FAOI 16: Well done to all involved in the Gary Scollard Hurling Tournament which took place on Saturday last. Teams that played: East Waterford, West Waterford, Duhallow, City & West Limerick, Seandún (Corcaigh), Kerry. The overall winners were Seandún; the Corkonians defeated West Waterford. The Kerry hurlers lost the Shield final …after extra time…to a luckier Limerick side. The hurlers of the Kingdom performed very well and were well able to rud shoulders with the best in Munster! Maith sibh!

COACHING: It’s good to note that Kerry hurler John Griffin is visiting Tralee schools with the intention of improving the standard of hurling and getting more youngsters involved in the “skilful game.”

GOOD LUCK: Our good wishes to the Kerry senior hurlers in their game against Antrim at the weekend.

PEIL FAOI 15: This squad is looking forward with great anticipation to our Under 15 trip to the Fermoy GAA club for the Fermoy annual tournament which will be held on Saturday week (April 4th). An-ócáid a bheidh ann cois Abhann Móire agus táimid ag súil go mór le céad chomórtas na foirne seo in ‘09!

125 BLIAIN: May 10th has been designated as Lá na gClubanna. How about a handball tournament between the Tralee town clubs?

FAOI 14: (i) Under 14 training (unless we’ve a league game) will take place on Wednesdays and on Fridays and on Sundays at 5pm (‘til 6.30pm). A boys and B boys will train separately. (ii) County league fixtures for the A team: Round 1 (divison 1) ~ on  Wednesday last, 25th March, we showed our strength against The Blues in Connolly Park. Our boys won in a very exciting match. They were early leaders and looked as if they’d stay in command and gain an easy 2 points but the Boys in Blue began a brave comeback and gradually closed the gap and even took the lead. Our lads missed a lot of scoring opportunities and their opposition availed of the many half chances that came their way to remain in contention…and they very nearly stole the show! The teams were on level terms in the dying minutes of a tension-packed hour after lántosach láidir Kyle Fizgibbon crashed the leather into the back of the Strand Road net. Heroic efforts were made by both sets of warriors to claim the laurels but a close-in free by Greg Horan for the ever-attacking Stacksmen resulted in a cúilín gleoite agus an bua for the Rock. What a relief…a different game from the one the week before ar an gCnoc Gorm. The game was ably directed by Moltóir Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh ó Chnoc na hEaglaise. Round 2 ~ on this Saturday, 28th March, our A boys will travel to An Daingean; Round 3 ~ on Wednesday next, 1st April, we’ll head for Ard Fhearta to take on the locals. (iii) Our A lads played played a friendly match against Kerins~O’Rahillys at Ballyrickard on Wednesday of last week. “Tús maith, leath na hoibre,” arsa Tim as we started the game strongly and by leatham we were in the driving seat…4-05 to 2-03. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first and The Rock ran out comfortable winners on a score of 8-13 to 4-06 to leave early season bragging rights with the Black and Amber. Team and scorers as follows: Cillian Comerford, Brian Horgan, Barry Walsh, Tommy Nicholson, James O’ Connor, Conor Jordan (Captain), Adam Barrett, Greg Horan (2-03), Tomas Ziga (2-01), Eoghan McKivergan (0-03), Brendan Duffin (0-01), James Galvin (0-01), Michael O’Donnell (1-00), Kyle Fitzgibbon (3-04) and Breandán Caball. Subs: Joseph O’Kelly, Kieran Flanagan and Michael Lynch. The second challenge of the week for these footballers was played on Sunday 15th March at Connolly Park against Laune Rangers. With some changes to the starting line-up, Stacks took some time to get into their stride against an under-strength Killorglin side. However, The Rock really dominated proceedings in the second half and ran out very convincing winners on a score of 8-10 to 0-05. Team and scorers as follows: Cillian Comerford, Graham Riordan, Barry Walsh, Tommy Nicholson, Shane Greensmith, Conor Jordan (Captain), Darragh O’Carroll, Greg Horan (1-01), Joseph O’Kelly, James O’Connor, Brian Horgan (0-01), James Galvin, Michael O’Donnell (2-01), Kyle Fitzgibbon (3-03), Eoghan McKivergan (2-03). Sub: John Nolan. (iii) The U14 B team had their first outing with a challenge against Ballymac on Sunday 15th March. The same B football team played their third challenge match of the year against Listowel Emmets at Connolly Park on Sunday, 22 March. The first half was very closely contested and Emmets led at half-time by 2-03 to 0-06. Stacks dominated the second period and ran out winners on a score of 1-15 to 3-04. The superior fitness of the Rock team was evident as the scores flowed more freely as the game wore on. Team: Craig Corcoran, Enda Jordan, David Walsh, Jason Carroll, Dylan Hartnett, Gavin Breen, John Nolan, Sam Nealon, Brian Hill, Timothy Murphy, Michael Lynch, Richard Hurley, Cian Casey, Anthony Moynihan and Jack O’Donnell. As Listowel had only 12 players, Niall Carroll-O’Kane, Seán Hurley and Dominic Horgan played with Emmets in the first half. This trio returned to play with Stacks in the second half when David Walsh, Jason Carroll and John Nolan played with the visitors. Our B team will begin their real action on this Saturday with an away game against Listowel Emmetts B…go n-éirí leo. (iv) The following are the County League Fixtures for the U14 B team: Saturday 28th March – Away to Listowel Emmets B; Wednesday 1st April – Home to Spa B; Wednesday 8th April – Home to Dr Crokes B; Wednesday 15th April – Away to Legion B.

ACADAMH NA gCAILÍNÍ:

Lá Pádraig Naofa: On Tuesday 17th the Academy went to town, it was fantastic to see so many of our girls marching in the parade; the girls did us all proud with their singing, whistling, horn blowing and flag waving; the day started with some of our older girls teaching the rest some new songs. Although the girls were waiting around for up to 45 minutes before the parade nobody got bored, songs were practised as was flag waving; when the parade started it was not long before a local rival club did their best to outsing the Stacks but were of course unsuccessful! Bhí glór ceolmhar binn ár gcailíní le cloisteáil ar fud an bhaile! “An raibh tú ar an gCarraig….nó an bhfaca tú gile na finne agus scéimh na mná?”….”Were you up the Rock…and did you see the brightness of the fair maiden and the beauty of the lady?”…the old song from Penal Times could well be describing our cailíní deasa in the parade!

We would like to say a big thank you to all the girls and parents who turned up on the day; it was also good to see some more of our girls marching with the cubs and brownies, etc. Also many thanks to all the mentors and club members who helped on the day.

Training: At Caherslee we were blessed with another sunny dry day which we hope is a sign of things to come! Once again more new girls came along to see what all the fuss is about. Now that they know, we expect that we will see them every week. Beidh fáilte rompu. Our numbers at training went up again this week with over sixty girls in Black and Amber. As usual, new drills were once again introduced along with some old favourites. The old saying goes “don’t run before you can walk”… well, some of these girls can do things running before they can do them walking! Training goes ahead at Caherslee on Sunday at 11.00. See you all there.

Parents: Could all parents please encourage girls to start wearing gum shields. Also, please ensure that all girls are registered with the club and that all details have been forwarded.

Well done: Congratulations to the Stacks team that beat Kerins~O’Rahillys on Sunday in the Town League Final.

Birthday Wishes: The Academy would like to wish a happy birthday to Kimberley Harris who will be ten on Monday 30th, to Rebecca Harris who will be twelve (dó dhéag = déagóir = teenager!) on Saturday 28th and to Eleanor Moloney who will be a lucky seven on Wednesday 1st April. Go raibh breithlaethanta sona agaibh!
