Juvenile Notes 20 February

February 20, 2009 By Brian Caball

HURLING/IOMÁNAÍOCHT: Hurling continues as usual next Sunday, 22ú Feabhra, in The Green School Gym. Times: at 4.30pm for all interested boys. Last week’s INDOOR session was enjoyed by all.

IOMÁNAÍOCHT FAOI 8, 10 & 12: Coaching for these groups will take off in the next few weeks when hurleys, times, manpower, venue, srl., are fully sorted out. Watch this space for news.

COACHING COURSE: On Saturday 28th February a HURLING COACHING course will take place in the Mercy Mounthawk School. All Tralee clubs are invited. In charge will be none other than the National Director of Hurling,  viz., Paudie Butler ó Thiobraid Árann. Also in attendance will be George O’Connor, the Wexford star of former years, as well as Donie Buckley, Pat Flanagan and Maurice Leahy. As all clubs are invited and as this is another big effort to promote “the skilful game” it would be good if The Rock Club were well represented on the day! A great day will be had by all! One would need to reserve a place immediately.

PEIL FAOI 6: The usual INDOOR action will take place for our Under 6 boys on Sunday next, 22nd February, @ 10am in the Mounthawk School Gym…a thuilleadh spóirt and plenty excitement!

PEIL FAOI 12: All boys born in 1997 & 1998 will begin their ’09 football programme @ 12.00 on this coming Sunday, 22nd February,  in CAHERSLEE. We look forward to seeing all our future stars…there are some mighty players in this age group! Registration for Under 12s is being looked after by Éamonn O’Reilly.

PEIL FAOI 14 A & B: (i) Our Under 14 A & B footballers (born 1995 & 1996) will have their usual indoor session on Sunday next at 5.30pm in the Green Gym. These session are going extremely well. We hope that these early preparations will ensure that we can make a good start to our forthcoming ’09 campaign. Registration is being handled by Michael Lynch. (ii) Our Under 14 stalwarts will travel to the Nemo Rangers’ Tournament in Cork City on Saturday 28th February…usually a great outing…and our boys are expected to do well!

PEIL FAOI 16: Our Under 16 lads (those born in ‘93 & in ‘94) will train as usual. One can register by paying €30 for the year (less than 59c a week!!) or by joining the CLUB ROCKIES (family membership + weekly lotto + All-Ireland Final ticket draw + games/training for player = less than €5 per week).

CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ: Well done to The Green Boys who have reached the semi-final of the Munster Colleges’ Senior Championship…comórtas Chorn Uí Mhuirí. Best of luck to our club representatives! Shane Carroll, Johnathon McCoy, David Mannix, George Bastible, Nicky O’Connell, Gary O’Connor, Frankie Murphy and Don Quinn are members of The Green panel that’ll face Killorglin in Corn Uí Mhuirí competition semi-final which will be played on Sunday next at 3pm i bPáirc Aibhistín de Staic. Go n-éirí go geal leo agus lena gcomhimreoirí ar fhoireann na Faiche. “Viva la, the blue & gold! Viva la, our heroes bold!” Does anybody know why “blue & gold” were chosen as The Green colours? A little bit of colour from each of the (then) town clubs! Dein machnamh air!

SCÓR NA bPÁISTÍ: The county final of Scór na bPáistí (for Primary School Pupils) will take place at 2pm on 29th March, probably in Gleann Beithe. The North Kerry semi-final will take place in Mainistir Ó dTórna at 7.30pm on 13th March and the other semi-final will be on 14th March. Tralee Board and St. Brendan’s Board will run our first round on Tuesday 10th March in the Kerins~O’Rahilly Club @ 7pm. “First place” in each discipline will qualify for the COUNTY semi-FINAL.

SCÓR NA SINSEAR: The county final of Senior Scór (for those who’ll be at least 17 years old on 1st January ’09) will be held at 7pm on Saturday 28th February. To reach that final individuals and groups must qualify from the Tralee/St. Brendan’s Board area competitions which will be held on the 26th February (Déardaoin) in the Kerins~O’Rahilly Clubhouse in Strand Road. We expect to enter teams for solo singing, aithriseoireacht, tráth na gceist(eanna) and bailéadghrúpa. Any takers for sketch, set dancing, music, figure dancing? All 5 Tralee GAA clubs…yes!…5!….as well as Churchhill, St. Pats, Ballymac and Ardfert (football club) are eligible to participate and we hope that all clubs will be represented. And the bonus for the winning item in each competition will be that he/she/they will go straight to the county final 2 nights later!

RULES OF SCÓR: Go to www.kerrygaa.ie…go to…about the gaa….go to….scór.

GAA~SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE QUIZ: Our club quiz team are working hard in preparation for the CLG/Seachtain na Gaeilge Tráth na gCeisteanna competition, the first round of which will take place in the Spá (Cill Airne) Clubhouse on Friday 6ú Márta. Format: team of 4, all team questions, general knowledge and as Gaeilge.

GAA 125: Don’t forget to watch “An GAA” on TG4 at 9.15pm on Friday and a following programme on Sunday afternoon around 2pm. This is a 10 week series of interesting facts about our association. When was “The Ban” removed? (What was “The Ban”?) Who was president of the GAA at the time? Who was the Kerryman who campaigned for many years to have it deleted? Who was Ard-Stiúrthóir (Director General) ag an am sin?

10th MAY: On Lá na gClubanna over 2,000 GAA clubs are expected to celebrate the 125th anniversary of our founding, a ceiliúradh that will be held on Sunday 10th May, a day on which games and commemorative events in local communities may take place. Ba cheart go mbeadh oíche go maidin againn! Any ideas? Cuir tuairimí os ár gcomhair!

HURLING: We are disappointed that our senior hurlers didn’t win against Carlow…but they were close. Let’s not give up hope at this early stage…they’re still building. Nár thóg sé tamall maith An Róimh a thógaint ar na 7 gcnoc? Who is the captain of the Kerry hurling team? Who is the trainer?

THE AUSTIN STACK CLUB’s FOOTBALL ACADEMY: Training went ahead as usual on Sunday, at the Green School Gym, with around sixty girls at the two sessions. All the girls in the first session had various drills which were carried out in the usual fun-filled manner and the Under 10 girls finished with an exciting game, thanks to the younger girls vacating to the courts. The Under 12 girls started with a handling drill which was carried out at a very fast pace…ar luas lasrach… and that was followed by some lighter training; the session ended with the usually hard fought game. Training goes ahead this Sunday at the following times: Under 6, Under 8 and Under 10 girls will have a throw in time of 10am and the Under 12 girls will be thrown in at 11am. Ag súil le lá iontach eile peile ar an Domhnach beag seo, a chailíní!

The Academy would like to wish Aiveen Gavaghan and Jade Diggins a very happy birthday as they both reach the grand old age of eleven this Saturday….(don’t worry, a chailíní, we’ll take it easy on the pair of you on Sunday!)…déagóirí eile…breithlá sona!

LÁ ‘LE PÁDRAIG: An early reminder for Saint Patrick’s Day: there will be a club representation at Mass in St Brendan’s Church and we will then be marching in the parade…ceiliúraimis Naomhpatrún na hÉireann!
