ACADAMH NA gCAILÍNÍ: (i) DÉ DOMHNAIGH: Numbers were small at the Academy on Sunday morning due to the heavy rainfall early in the morning but the brave souls who turned up must be praised for their commitment.
As luck would have it, the rain stayed away for the duration of the training and those who attended were rewarded with lively sessions where plenty of attention was given.
(ii) FÁILTE: Welcome back to Gemma Ní Chonaill and also a warm welcome to Linda Raymond, both of whom helped with the coaching.
(iii) FAOI 12: The Under12 team travelled to Glenflesk on Tuesday evening last where they played a fast-paced match in beautiful conditions in a picturesque setting. Playing into a strong breeze in the first half they threatened the Glenflesk goal on occasions but failed to score. However, with the wind at their backs in the second half, they had more possession and this in turn resulted in some well taken scores. Gleann Fleisce were worthy winners on the night and we would like to wish them well for the rest of the season. Training for this group of players will continue on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm to 6.45pm as well as the 11.00am Sunday morning session.
(iv) LAETHANTA SPRAOI: The academy would like to take the opportunity to thank Joe McMahon and the third class teachers in Scoil Eoin Baiste, Balluamhnach, for their cooperation in the delivery of a series of Fundays. Academy coaches visited the school and organised games and activities for the children in the third classes. The children in turn were wonderfully energetic in their participation in the sessions and made the visits most rewarding for the coaches. We look forward to many more opportunities for cooperation between these two close neighbours. We wish all in Scoil Eoin a wonderful summer holiday.
(v) ÁR MNÁ SPÓRTÚLA: Austin Stack Ladies GAA Club is truly an intergenerational one as last Tuesday saw the start of the mums’ & friends’ fitness & footie. These sessions will continue for the summer in Connolly Park on Tuesday evenings from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. All are welcome to join Liam’s Ladies and prior experience is not required….just bring a can do attitude….and a bottle of water!

(iii) Tralee Community Gardaí (Coiste Thrá Lí) Under 14 Football League Division 1. The U14 A team got their Tralee Town League campaign off to a winning start with a hard fought victory away to Listowel Emmets on Monday last, 29th June. Short a number of regulars due to injuries and holidays, Stacks started well and led at half-time~>3-10 to 2-06. Playing with the wind in the second half, The Rock dominated the exchanges early on and extended their lead. However, through poor finishing and tiredness, they left Emmets back into the game and were relieved to be 3 points clear on the final whistle.

IOMÁNAÍOCHT FAOI 16/17/18: (i) On Monday last our very young minors, though missing a number of good players (ar saoire nó sa Ghaeltacht), showed some good hurling when they played Kenmare in their first game of the season. Though outclassed on the scoreboard, our lads gave of their best until the long whistle, despite being a man short for the entire game. The experience gained will stand to them. As the game progressed they were certainly improving. They need more games…cleachtadh a dhéanann máistreacht! It was good to see a number of the senior hurlers shouting on the minors from the sideline…..and even a bit inside it!! Tá spiorad maith sna leaideanna seo. Well done, Brendan! And well done, Ger! Was this the first time in 10 years that we’ve fielded a minor hurling team? Dul chun cinn, a dhuine….progress!!
(ii) On Monday next at 7.30pm in Ardfert they’ll challenge the St. Brendan boys.
(iii) Hurling training will take place in Connolly Park at 7.00pm on Wednesday and at 5.30pm on Friday

40 YEARS OF SCÓR: To celebrate 40 years of Scór (‘69~’o9) a celebration concert will be held in the Malton Hotel, Cill Airne, on Saturday 15th August. Should be an enjoyable evening!
FADÓ FADÓ: (i) A daring raid by Rock Street men took place on a summer afternoon 89 years ago. Conas? It had been observed that a group of English soldiers guarding coal in Tralee Railway Station would have their lunch in a carriage parked in a siding around the time of the arrival of the Fenit train. A few members of the Rock Street Volunteers (D Company) left their places of work at midday and went to The Spa where they boarded the Fenit~Tralee train. Two Volunteers travelled in the engine with the driver and fireman. At Mounthawk the train was stopped and more Volunteers boarded. Ar aghaidh leis an traein. Then the train stopped in Tralee Station beside the carriage in which were the eating soldiers. Out jumped the young Volunteers and quickly overpowered the surprised soldiers, taking their rifles. Thus the men of Rock Street gained eleven weapons which became the backbone of D Company’s armoury. An Charraig Abú! There is no record of whether or not the footballers of The Rock, or the hurlers, had training that summer evening 89 years ago!
(ii) Tralee Mitchels and OAKPARK….sea, Oakpark…a sign of things to come!!….were the only Tralee teams down for that year’s football championship but, as GAA people had other things on their minds, the competition was cancelled! Neither was the hurling championship finished, though Tralee Parnells had reached the semi-final (having won the previous year’s competition)!
