All roads led to Killorglin on Sunday evening last for round 4 of the Lee Strand County League. Pride of place this week goes to our ‘B’ team who put up a brilliant all-round display against a talented Laune Rangers side. From the throw-in, our midfield pairing of Darragh Lyons and Joe Barry secured possession and, with some lovely passing football that would become the style of play for the evening, Stacks were on the attack straight away. David Hobbert opened the scoring with a well-taken point from play. After dealing with some tight and heavy marking, Dean Courtney at right halfback got his name on the scoreboard with a lovely-taken point. Laune Rangers responded well to our good start by scoring an early goal and a point themselves. The game was developing into a tough encounter with some hard play from both teams. An injury to Rian McEvoy saw him replaced midway through the 2nd quarter. Undeterred, our boys stuck to the plan and consistently worked the ball up the field and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Points by our captain for the game, Tadhg Falvey, and by Nathan Hurley (2) and Joe Barry saw Stacks leading at half time….0-7 to Laune Rangers’ 1-3.
The 2nd half started well for us and we put the Laune Rangers defence under pressure from the throw-in. Direct passing play and some great fielding by full forward Barry Laide saw us pick off scores from free kicks and open play. We certainly did not have it our own way in the 2nd half and our defence line of Brian Kavanagh, Fionn Cotter and Oran O’Donoghue was busy keeping the ball out of the danger area. Our goalkeeper, Alex Darfoor, pulled off a number of great saves to keep us on top. Before the game started, coach Pa Laide had told the boys to ‘trust themselves on the ball’ and this was the case all evening. Super defensive play and passing by Jamie Casey, Harry Neale, Dean Courtney and Darragh Lyons saw midfielder Joe Barry and half forward Tadhg Falvey score well-taken goals in the 2nd half. Ewan Canty and Luke O’Connor also came close to scoring. Our replacements from the bench, cousins Micheál Cotter and Billy Kirby, added our final few scores as Stacks took control of the game. Overall, we witnessed a very good team performance by our boys who put into practice what we have been doing in training. Final score….Laune Rangers: 1-07; AdeS: 3-12. Maith sibh, a bhuachaillí.
A Match: The Launesiders’ comprehensive win over the John Mitchel Club boys the previous Sunday had forewarned all up and down The Rock that a huge challenge lay in store for us and so it proved in the opening minutes as a well-oiled blue’n’white attack clicked straight into gear. Our midfield and halfback line were under immense pressure in the opening quarter and we struggled to supply our forward line with the quality of delivery needed against a fast and tight-marking Laune Rangers defence. An injury to our centre forward, Jake Carmody, added to our ongoing casualty woes and a very difficult first half ended on a scoreline of Laune Rangers 3-9, Na Stacaigh 0-2. Not for the first time this season, our U13 warriors refused to submit and were more than competitive for much of the second half. The highlights of the second 25 minutes were a wonderful solo goal by Alex Tuohy and defiant defensive play by the black’n’amber backs led by Gabriel Nosidlak, Eoghan Murphy and Adam Johnston. A final flurry of Killorglin points saw the home side finish strongly to leave the final score at Laune Rangers 3-19, Na Stacaigh 1-6. Congratulations to a fine Laune Rangers team but no less credit to our brave young men who continue to show great resolve and determination against the very strongest teams in the county. Up The Rock!!

GALF – British Open Golf Challenge July 15-18th: A major fundraiser for 2021 is a British Open golf predictor. This golf tournament will take place at The Royal St George Club in Sandwich, Kent, England, from July 15th to 18th. Our predictor will have an overall pot of €2,000 and €1,000 will go to the winner. Ní beag an méid sin! The idea with the predictor is for the punter to choose the six golfers, from a field of 126, who, in his/her opinion/judgement, will finish the four-round tournament with the lowest cumulative score. An in-play scoreboard for all players will go live for all participators throughout the tournament. The club is hoping to encourage as many people as possible to take part. We are asking, firstly, that you play and, secondly, that you distribute the online link to play to your What’s App groups and request them to support you and have a go. The online link can be found on our club website/twitter/facebook pages; it has also been messaged to our club members. Non-online cards are also being distributed and may be returned to club officials by 11am on July 14th. Note: the field of 126 does not include final round qualifiers.
