CARRAIG an tSEACHTAR LAOCH: Our seachtar sárpheileadóirí on the Kerry minor panel (and extended panel) are still keeping themselves fit and ready for an All-Ireland semi-final. Fingers crossed!! Let’s hope that Dean Rusk, Shane Bastible, Conor Horan, Jordan Kissane, Ben Quilter, Armin Heinrich and Joey Nagle will have a successful end to their 2020 championship! What a joy it would be if seven Rock boys were part of an U17 Kerry team that managed to ‘return’ the Tom Markham Cup to The Kingdom for the 17th time! (Minor All-Irelands were won by Kerry in ‘31, ‘32, ‘33, ‘46, ‘50, ‘62, ‘63, ‘75, ‘80, ‘88, ‘94, 2014, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, ’18. Cork and Dublin follow with 11 each, then Tyrone with 8 and Mayo with 7). Cérbh é Tomás Ua Marcacháin? Who was Tom Markham? Read on….
TOM MARKHAM CUP: Thomas Joseph Markham, son of John Markham and Bridget Slattery, was born in Craig Bhriain (south of Ennis), County Clare, on the 14th December 1878, 6 years before the GAA was founded. He worked as a civil servant and was residing in Dublin when he married Agnes Daly in Béal Átha an Chomhraic Church, not far from his home place, in 1907. By 1911, he was an Assistant Clerk in the Local Government Board and was using the Irish-language version of his name, Tomás Ua Marcacháin. (Perhaps, in his memory, we should use that version of his name when we talk about Corn Thomáis Uí Mharcacháin! Why not?) He joined the Irish Volunteers around 1912 and worked as an intelligence officer for Michael Collins. He was very active in GAA affairs and founded two GAA clubs in Dublin. He died at his residence, 25 Windsor Avenue, Fairview, on the 15th June 1939, just before WW II. After his death, funds were collected to provide the Tom Markham Memorial Cup (Corn Cuimhneacháin Thomáis Uí Mharcacháin), which was awarded annually, from 1940 to 2013, to the All-Ireland Minor Football Champions. The original cup was replaced in 2014. (Read about his great grandson (Tom Markham) on Google. B’fhiú é a léamh!)
