Juvenile Club Notes 5th January, 2021

January 5, 2021 By Brian Caball

PEIL FAOI 14: Unfortunately, our U14 boys’ training is on hold due to recent COVID directions (Leibhéal 5)! All players are earnestly urged to keep training privately.

PEIL FAOI 6/8/10/12/16: Total closedown for a little while…..please do your football exercises every day: (i) kick passes, (ii) solos, (iii) pick-ups, (iv) fist passes, (v) body catches, (vi) high catches and (vii) running. Le cúnamh Dé, ní fada go mbeimid i mbun traenála agus ag ullmhú do chluicí 2021!

CRUINNIÚ CINN BHLIANA: The senior club AGM will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday next (January 13th). It will be held on line via Microsoft Teams. Members who wish to participate must register in advance. To register or for any other information (e.g. motions/moltaí), please send an e-mail to secretary.austinstacks.kerry@gaa.ie

JUVENILE AGM: Our JUVENILE AGM will take place on line tonight – January 5th at 7.30pm. We’ll have an update next week, LCD.

CARRAIG an tSEACHTAR LAOCH: Our seachtar sárpheileadóirí on the Kerry minor panel (and extended panel) are still keeping themselves fit and ready for an All-Ireland semi-final. Fingers crossed!! Let’s hope that Dean Rusk, Shane Bastible, Conor Horan, Jordan Kissane, Ben Quilter, Armin Heinrich and Joey Nagle will have a successful end to their 2020 championship! What a joy it would be if seven Rock boys were part of an U17 Kerry team that managed to ‘return’ the Tom Markham Cup to The Kingdom for the 17th time! (Minor All-Irelands were won by Kerry in ‘31, ‘32, ‘33, ‘46, ‘50, ‘62, ‘63, ‘75, ‘80, ‘88, ‘94, 2014, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, ’18. Cork and Dublin follow with 11 each, then Tyrone with 8 and Mayo with 7). Cérbh é Tomás Ua Marcacháin? Who was Tom Markham? Read on….

TOM MARKHAM CUP: Thomas Joseph Markham, son of John Markham and Bridget Slattery, was born in Craig Bhriain (south of Ennis), County Clare, on the 14th December 1878, 6 years before the GAA was founded. He worked as a civil servant and was residing in Dublin when he married Agnes Daly in Béal Átha an Chomhraic Church, not far from his home place, in 1907. By 1911, he was an Assistant Clerk in the Local Government Board and was using the Irish-language version of his name, Tomás Ua Marcacháin. (Perhaps, in his memory, we should use that version of his name when we talk about Corn Thomáis Uí Mharcacháin! Why not?) He joined the Irish Volunteers around 1912 and worked as an intelligence officer for Michael Collins. He was very active in GAA affairs and founded two GAA clubs in Dublin. He died at his residence, 25 Windsor Avenue, Fairview, on the 15th June 1939, just before WW II. After his death, funds were collected to provide the Tom Markham Memorial Cup (Corn Cuimhneacháin Thomáis Uí Mharcacháin), which was awarded annually, from 1940 to 2013, to the All-Ireland Minor Football Champions. The original cup was replaced in 2014. (Read about his great grandson (Tom Markham) on Google. B’fhiú é a léamh!)

STILL LIKE TO GET INVOLVED? The Rock Club is inviting people who might be interested in coaching Gaelic games or who might like to be involved in club activities. Feel free to text or call Éamonn on 0879677034. Areas of involvement: administration, underage football, hurling (we are a hurling and football club), various age groups, male/female, men’s division 5 football, Scór…music, song, dance, sketch, recitation, quiz. Fáilte mhór roimh dhaoine nua agus roimh thuairimí nua. Check times of AGMs on www.austinstacks.ie.

FOCLÓIR: Tá giorra anála orm! Tá saothar orm! (I’ve shortness of breath! I’m winded!) Tá crampa ar mo cholpa! (I’ve a cramp in my calf!) Táim tugtha traochta! (I’m jacked!) Tá arraing ionam! (I’ve a stitch!) Sheas an diabhal sin ar ordóg mo choise! (That devil stood on my big toe!) Bí foighneach agus tiocfaidh do sheans! (Be patient and your chance’ll come!) An bhfaca an réiteoir é? (Did the referee see it/him?) Greamú fealltach a bhí ann! Taicil calaoiseach a bhí ann! (‘Twas a foul tackle!) Tá an ballnasc briste arís! The ligament is ruptured again!)
