PEIL FAOI 16:
We began the year away back in early January with close to 35 boys actively taking part in the U16 age group activities. Thankfully, with all the hard work and commitment since, close to that number played in two Central League finals this week. And that’s pure true!
(i) The Austin Stack Club boys U16B team played in the Central League Division 5 final on Wednesday night (14th May) in Currow. And what a beautiful evening for football it was! The opposition was a strong Ballymac team with plenty of good footballers. The Rock had just fifteen stalwarts who approached the game with the determination that we are used to seeing from Black‘n’Amber players. Every club player gave one hundred percent and peppered the Ballymac goal from the throw-in. However, it was one of those games when nothing would go over the bar or into the net. Ballymac weathered The Rock storm, went on the offensive and went ahead on the scoreboard with a number of well-taken points. The Rockie players stuck to their task and were unlucky not to be going in, at half-time, on level terms; several shots, that on any other night would have gone in at the correct side of the posts, just trailed agonisingly wide! Gremlins at work!! The second half started with a series of courageous attacks by The Rock; they resulted in 3 unanswered points but Ballymac worked their way back on top and this, combined with The Rock’s failure to find or manufacture or even steal scores, resulted in a Ballymac victory on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-5. Mór an trua ach beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach! Overall, we were happy enough with this performance considering that we were down a good few players, due to school and other sporting commitments, and that we faced a very strong Ballymac team. Foireann na Carraige: Oran O’Regan; Alex O’Flaherty, Diarmuid Hennessy, Séamus Keenan; Tadhg Somers, Liam Swords, Joe Barry; Nathan O’Connor, Elliott Calleja; Barry Laide, Mark Foley, Jayden O’Dowd; Oisín Cotter, Ryan McCord, Joe O’Halloran.
(ii) On Thursday 15th May our A team played in the Central League Division 1 final against Laune Rangers in Ballyrickard. It was a warm night for a game and we instinctively knew this was going to be a tough encounter. Unfortunately, on the morning of the game we learned that two regular A team starters had taken ill and would be unavailable to play. We restructured our forces and, thankfully, our lads settled well in the first half and went into the break with a 10 point lead….1-10 to 0-3. At half-time we warned our boys that the Killorglin lads would have a strong purple patch and how right we were! We could not get a foothold in the 2nd half and our scoring dried up! The Laune Rangers lads were up for everything. Thankfully and with some strong work by our defence we did well to hold the lead until the final whistle. Full time score…AdeS: 1-14; Laune Rangers: 1-13. A nail biter to the end, stress for management and, fortunately, that’s two-in-a-row in this competition! U16-ers: Barry Laide, Ben Litchfield, Conor O’Regan, Danny Lane, David Hobbert, Denis Brassil, Harry Murphy, Jack Delaney, Jamie Ó Cathasaigh, Joe de Barra, Liam Swords, Mark Riordan, Oran O’Donoghue, Ryan O’Carroll, Diarmuid Hennessy, Jayden O’Dowd, Nathan O’Connor, Noah Reidy, Ryan O’Flaherty, Tadhg Somers, Eoin Mangan, Alex O’Flaherty, Fionn Cotter, Hawlie Cotter, Oran O’Regan, Conor Murphy, Dean Courtney, Eliot Calleja, Mark Foley, Séamus Keenan, Seán McCannon, Tom Dawson, Oisín Cotter, Joe O’Halloran, Ediart Topali, David Ahern, Darragh Lyons, Ewan Canty. So, overall, we have to be happy with where the group is at this point in the season. Having both teams in finals is a good return for all the hard work and commitment put in so far this year. Well done, boys and management.
