THE ROCK ALL-STARS: The All-Stars had another great session last weekend. There was more great excitement i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile on Sunday last with our lads really enjoying their drills, skills and spills! We (coaches and players) will continue to enjoy the sessions and to perform to the best of our abilities as we get better and better with each passing week; sea, táimid ag dul i bhfeabhas ó sheachtain go seachtain! Parents, feel free to bring your youngster along to The Rock, Connolly Park, on Sunday next (18th June) to give him/her the opportunity of increasing his/her social participation, to make friends and to gain confidence. CÓITSEÁIL: All COACHES are invited to attend two upcoming club coaching sessions. The sessions will be run by Billy Lee, senior team coach/bainisteoir, David Lavin and Mickey Collins. The first session has been scheduled for this Wednesday (14th June) from 7pm to 9pm and the 2nd session will be held on Tuesday 20thJune (7pm to 9pm). These sessions will be held in conjunction with two senior team training/game sessions. We respectfully suggest that all club coaches attend these worthwhile sessions. PEIL FAOI 13: The Austin Stack Club Bs challenged the Listowel Emmet Club B boys in the U13 County League (Division 13) Final on Sunday last. It was truly an epic County League Final that was described by many in attendance as the ‘best game of underage football’ that they had ever watched. Unfortunately, our gallant heroes came out on the wrong side of a high scoring encounter. Regardless of the result, these boys can be very proud of their performance and, knowing their spirit and character, we can truthfully state and reassure everybody that they will bounce back. This is merely the end of the beginning and there is still plenty of football to come over the summer. Sea, beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach!
Match report, courtesy of Ed O’Regan:An scór deireanach….Listowel Emmets B: 5-13; Austin Stack Club B: 5-10. The lads came up just short against a very strong Listowel side in a pulsating encounter played in sunny St Senan’s Club grounds in front of a large attendance. The young Rockites started off well and picked off a few early scores but Listowel grew into the game and took control with a couple of goals. This, however, didn’t deter The Rock lads who scored a goal of their own and, due to some fine Listowel defending, were unlucky not to get another. At the other end, the Stack Club defence had to work hard to repel a number of Listowel attacks. They worked hard to get the deficit back to 0-3 but Listowel picked off another point from a free that left The Rockies trailing by 0-4 going into the half-time break. A mini-mountain that The Rock had to climb got a little higher when Listowel came out for the second half firing on all cylinders and immediately pointed to stretch the lead out to 0-5. This Black‘n’Amber team has shown throughout the season that they have great fighting spirit and Sunday night last was no different. Following the Listowel point they turned in a blistering 10-minute display, scoring 2-1 to turn the game on its head and they then lead by 0-2. The game was now really in the melting pot and the next goal would be critical and, in fairness, the Listowel side wasn’t found wanting in fighting spirit, either! Unfortunately, they picked off the next two goals and a couple of points to extend their lead to 0-6 with less than 10 minutes to go. This Tralee team was never going to lie down and an excellently-worked close-range free kick found the net and reduced the margin to 0-3 with 5 minutes remaining. Excitement mounted! With both sides now on 5 goals, Stacks had the difficult task of having to find 0-3 to equalise. They found one to reduce the margin to 0-2 with a couple of minutes remaining and pushed hard to get another but Listowel got the final score to leave 0-3 between the sides. Things rested so and the corn went towards the River Feale instead of the Lee! Well done, everybody! Thanks to the Listowel contingent and thanks to the referee for allowing an excellent free-flowing game of football that was very exciting for the large crowd in attendance. This was a tough one to take for this young Rock side; this was the first experience of a competitive final for the majority of these boys! Defeat is always tough to take but these lads and their coaches can be very proud of the players’ effort and performance; they have shown that they still have a great summer ahead with a number of competitions up for grabs; their day will come!

PLAQUE: The plaque in memory of Dr Thomas Croke (1824 – 1902), Archbishop of Cashel and first Patron of the GAA, on the wall of Hogan’s Paint Shop in The Square, was unveiled 12 years ago by Archbishop Dermot Clifford. That property was once owned by the Thompson and Croke families. Young Thomas William Croke spent many summer vacations there. It is said that he spoke with a Tralee/Kerry accent throughout his life! His parents, William and Isabella, first lived in Tralee where their two eldest children were born. They later moved to Ballyclough in North Cork to manage the Deane-Freeman Estate. Their third child, Thomas William, was born in Castlecor (between Kanturk and Buttevant) and baptised in Kilbrin Church. In his late teens Thomas William Croke began his studying for the priesthood. He attended the Irish Colleges in Paris and in Rome and he did well in his studies. He sold his Roman academic awards of silver and gold for Irish Famine Relief in 1847, the year in which he was ordained priest. He was also a gifted sportsman and he realised the importance of sport for young people. Archbishop Croke’s written response to Michael Cusack’s invitation, in 1884, to become Patron of the newly founded GAA is a document of importance and is regarded as the GAA’s ‘Magna Carta.’
