PEIL FAOI 13: Phase 2 of the County League kicked off for both our A and B teams in Connolly Park on Sunday last (14th May) and The Legion footballers were our visitors. Our B team boys continued their fine form with another comprehensive victory. Unfortunately, our A team had a tough evening and lost out to the Killarney boys. Training continues this Tuesday and Thursday as we prepare for a local derby v the John Mitchel Club U13s.
(i) U13 County League (Division 9) Phase 2…AdeS B: 5-10; Killarney Legion B: 0-7. After a break of a couple of weeks, following the completion of Phase 1, the B boys were back in action in Phase 2 and they picked up where they left off with another good win after a great performance against a strong Legion side. It was a breezy evening in Connolly Park; Legion won the toss and played with the aid of the breeze in the first half. Playing against the elements didn’t deter The Rock lads. They came out flying, played some lovely football and quickly slotted 3 goals. Though our forwards were converting their chances, the team didn’t have it all its own way and our defenders had to work extremely hard to keep Legion at bay. Our brave Bs continued to pick off some great scores and the scoreboard read 3-4 to 0-1 at the break. Our lads could have been forgiven for taking the foot of the gas in the 2nd half but they didn’t and picked off another quick goal. Fair-play to The Legion lads who never gave up; our 4th goal seemed to spark them into life and they picked off some great points. For 10 minutes they had us penned in, under siege agus faoi léigear but the solid Rock defence held firm and kept a clean sheet. The forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end and left the final score at 5-10 to 0-7 in favour of the Black‘n’Ambers. Well done, boys! Thanks to the The Legion players and coaches for a very sporting and fair game with no bad word or foul tackle being heard or seen and some great football being played. Great start to Phase 2 for the lads and they can look forward with confidence to the two big mouth-watering local derbies that will take place over the coming weekends.
(ii) U13 County League (Division 1A) Phase 2….AdeS A: 0-4; Legion A: 0-13. Our U13 A team commenced Phase 2 of the County League in Connolly Park last Sunday evening (14ú Bealtaine) in aghaidh Léigiún Chill Airne. Playing against a strong breeze, our boys were made to work hard defensively as the visitors seemed to make the most of the elements. In a scrappy 1st half scores were hard to come by and the visitors led by four points at half-time. Scór leathama….Stacaigh: 0-3; Léigiún: 0-7. Knowing that the wind would be at their backs in the 2nd half our boys came out determined to claw back the deficit. Unfortunately, the 3rd quarter was also a low-scoring affair and, as the game entered the closing stages with our boys’ legs wilting after an hour of chasing the game, the visitors tacked on the insurance scores. Scór deiridh…. AdeS A: 0-4; An Léigiún: 0-13. Thanks to Legion for a keen contest and thanks to the referee for her handling of the game. U13 A: David Ahern; Michael Carmody, Kian Cronin, Oisín Horan; Shea Horan, Luke Kavanagh, Billy Kirby; Danny Lane, Tadhg Lucey; Dylan McEvoy, Conor Murphy, Jayden O’Dowd; Ryan O’Flaherty, Tadhg O’Regan, Noah Reidy; Mark Riordan, Liam Swords, Ediart Topali. Meabhrúchán: training continues this Tuesday and Thursday as we prepare for a big John Mitchel Club challenge. (Dan Ahern)

FAOI 15: (i) We faced Na Gaeil in the semi-final of the County League (Division 2) on Wednesday 10th. Our A team made the short trip across town and up to Killeen for this local derby. ‘Twas a tight affair in the first half and the teams were level at the break….2-3 to 2-3. Unfortunately, we did not perform as well as we might in the 2nd half, Na Gaeil proved the stronger agus bí rith an ráis ag Glasaigh an Chillín….3-10 in aghaidh 2-5. Well done, boys on a good effort! (i) Wednesday the 17th was the scheduled date for our B team to play their semi-final in Division 9 against Laune Rangers. Unfortunately, Connolly Park was quite busy with other fixtures that night (we’re a busy club!) and, so, we are waiting on confirmation of a new date for this much anticipated tie. We can’t wait!! Bímis foighneach, a bhuachaillí! Beireann foighne faoiseamh! (Ger Hobbert)

FAOI 15: Comhghairdeachas to The Rock boys who were part of The Green team that won Corn an Ruiséalaigh (Kerry Schools U15 football). The game was played in the Dr Thomas Croke Club pitch, Killarney, and Killorglin’s Intermediate School team was the opposition. In a very competitive game the Tralee Blue‘n’Gold boys led at half-time by 0-4….0-10 to 1-3; the Killorglin goal came on the stroke of half-time. ISK came out the stronger after the break and smartly scored another goal; they then added a few points before The Green rallied, upped a gear or two and went on to win with strength and confidence. This was a good team performance. Final score….Tralee CBS: 4-15; Intermediate School Killorglin: 3-7. The Rock players on the Tralee CBS panel: Aodhán Horgan (who played very well in the number 4 jersey), Rian Walsh and Maksmillian Grzybowski. Maith sibh, a leaideanna na Faiche! Paul Russell (1906–1965), after whom the cup was named, was a great Dr Croke Club player who played with Kerry from 1924 to 1933. He was only seventeen years old when he won his first Celtic Cross (1924). He went on to add five more All-Ireland medals to his collection. Russell also won seven Munster medals, three National Football League medals and three Railway Cup medals with Munster. He also played for Ireland in the Tailteann Games in 1928 and 1932. After retirement from football Paul trained the Meath and the Waterford senior football teams. He became a respected sports journalist. Laoch peile ab ea é! [Quiz: even though he won 6 senior All-Ireland medals, Paul Russell won the ‘Sam Maguire’ only 4 times! Conas?]
