Austin Stacks V Kerins O’Rahillys
We kicked off this years County League with a home tie against our near neighbours Strand Road on Sunday evening. Both clubs had two evenly matched teams with friends, neighbours & classmates going head to head in battle in the famous ‘black n amber’ & blue & white. On pitch 1 the Rockies had some great displays from Tom O Farrell, David Burke, Darragh Barry/Walsh & Craig Teahan in defence while in midfield Padraig ‘Poga’ McCannon & Eoghan Carroll covered the whole pitch. At the other end Josh Hayes, Niall Hurley, Sean O Driscoll, James O Sullivan & the latest of the Bastible clan to make his mark Joe, played some lovely passes. Padraic Linnane, Liam Nolan & Mark Dziedziuch kicked some fine points tormenting the visitors defence time after time. We just about shaded this game by the narrowest of margins.
Pitch 2 had Donagh McMahon in fine form in defence, ably assisted by Jack McGrath, these two were coolness personified. In front of the back two the hard working Conor Myers & Dillon Casey ran their socks off pushing forward at every opportunity. The midfield pair of Gearoid Fitzgerald & Michael O Gara were everywhere, fielding, passing & supporting the play. Evan Maher linked up with Gearoid Sheehan who kicked some great points, while David Couchman, Garry Clifford, Tadgh Hurley, Dean Scanlon & Mike Slattery (sporting the Rock colours on his head, could catch-on) played fantastic one-twos. In keeping with the Go-Games rules all players in both games played in a number of positions with 6 different players in goals on pitch 2 with Jack McGrath making a point-blank save to deny a Strand road forward a certain goal. A few points separated the sides at the end with our boys getting their first win of the campaign.
The management team were delighted with the performance of both teams on the night. Thanks to Mike & George for officiating so fairly & to Pat, Paul & Eddie from Strand road for 2 very sporting games. Training at 6 on Thursday with an away fixture against Legion next Sunday at 7, texts with info during the week.
