Everyone in the Club and the local community were saddened to learn of the death of Trevor Barrett on this Easter Sunday at the young age of 29. Trevor took suddenly ill at the beginning of the month and, although rallied somewhat for a period, he passed away at Cork University Hospital earlier this afternoon. Trevor played both codes with the Club for many years. At one stage or another he played on all our three football teams – Senior, Junior B and Junior C. But Hurling was really his first love and he was an accomplished hurler.
Over the past five seasons (2009-2013) he played a total of 84 games with The Hurlers, lining out in all six forward positions, though specializing in the No. 10 shirt. He was regularity one of the top scorers from play during each of those seasons, scoring some spectacular goals in the process. In season 2010, for example he was 2nd on the scoring list from play with a total of 7-21. The following year he was 3rd highest with 7-13 and in 2012 he clocked up a further 5-9.
His loss to the Club and to the Hurlers, in particular, will be great, but this pales into insignificance when compared with the loss he will be to his family and his girlfriend, Lorraine Counihan (sister of Club footballer, Dale). We extend sincere sympathy to Lorraine and to Trevor’s parents Betty and Richard, his brother Paul, sister Gillian and to all his other relatives, and many friends. Suaimhneas sioraí duit, a Trevor uasal. Funeral Arrangements: Waking at his home in Clogherbrien tomorrow Tuesday (22nd April) from 4-8pm. Requiem mass at 11am Wednesday April 23rd at Our Lady & St. Brendan’s Church Tralee. Club will provide a guard of honour from Church to New Rath Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
