Molyneaux Cup – Junior B Football
Austin Stacks 2-10 Dingle 0-6
Our B team progressed to the quarter final of the Co. Championship (Molyneaux Cup) with a comfortable win over Dingle in the only round 1 game of the competition played in glorious summer conditions at Connolly Park on this Friday evening (10th Aug). Kyle Fitzgibbon gave us the lead with a pointed free in the 7th minute after a foul on David Courtney. A minute later Ciaran O’Connell fielded beautifully and, on the turn, sent over with his left.
After Dingle opened their account in the 10th minute, came the first of our two goals. David Courtney won possession in front of the Clubhouse and he jinked his way through a forest of players to shoot to the roof of the net from an acute angle.
With Sean Purcell and Gearóid McCann having a blinder at centre field we were continually on the attack which yielded a further five points before the break (to 3 for the opposition) with Gary O’Connor (2), St. John Hegarty, David Courtney and Ciarán O’Connell on target.
This left us ahead by two clear goals at half time (1-7 to 0-4).
A beautiful move just a minute after the resumption saw David Courtney and Ciaran O’Connell set up Kyle Fitzgibbon for a lovely point.
It took another nine minutes before the next score came and it was our 2nd goal which really put the game out of reach of the visitors. Breandán Caball won possession on the 50 yard line and made a straight line through the Dingle defence to unleash a cracker to the net.
With both sets of defenders playing well, the last 20 minutes of the game only yielded two points each to both sides – ours coming from our two wing forwards, Gazza O’Connor and David Courtney.
Team: Jonathan Conway, Paul Galvin, Alan Crean, Shane Fitzgerald, Barry Walsh, Séamus Bastible (Capt), St. John Hegarty (0-1), Seán Purcell, Gearóid McCann, David Courtney (1-2), Breandán Caball (1-0), Gary O’Connor (0-3), Ciarán O’Connell (0-2), Pádraig Lynch, Kyle Fitzgibbon (0-2 – 1 free).
Subs: Shane Walsh (41m), Conor Jordan (45m), Anthony Shanahan (46m), Trevor Barrett (49m).
So now we have another home game in the quarter final against John Mitchels on next Friday (17th Aug) at 7pm.
