JOHNNY HORGAN.
Johnny Horgan, who regretfully, passed away peacefully last Wednesday (7th October) was one of the great Rock centre-backs of his day. He was, like many of his contemporaries of the sixties/early seventies, that bit unlucky to have just missed out on the second golden era of the Club. He made his Senior Co. Championship debut on 7th July 1963 and went on to play Senior Football with the Club until 1970. The team that lined out on that July day in 1963 was Monny Breen, Tadhg Driscoll, Mick Ryan, Mike Quirke. Johnny B. Brosnan, Johnny Horgan, Jacko Lawlor, Shamie Condon, John Barry, Ollie Dowling, Henry McKinney, Donal King, Sylvie Tucker Reidy, Seán Hutchinson, Pa Fanning. Subs: Junior Chute, Joe Joe Barrett. Stacks went down to a very strong East Kerry side on that day by 4-6 to 1-8 with Henry McKinney scoring 1-6 of Stacks total. Henry, of course, went on later that year to play a leading role in Kerry’s All Ireland Minor Final victory over Westmeath (1-10 to 0-2) scoring the only goal of the game and winning his 2nd All Ireland MF medal.
When Johnny played his last Senior Championship game with the Club, seven years later (on the 9th August 1970), there were only two other players of that 1963 team playing alongside him – John Barry and Joe Joe Barrett.
The team that lined out with Johnny in his last game on that August day was: Gerry Dennehy, Tommy Hannafin, Mike McCarthy, Tony O’Keeffe, Garry Scollard, Johnny Horgan, Tim Crean, John O’Keeffe, Ger O’Keeffe, Tommy Kennington, Tommy Bracker O’Regan, Ger Power, John Barry, Joe Joe Barrett, Paudie McCarthy. Sub: Fergus Dillon.
Johnny also served time in the as a Club officer – below see photo of the Austin Stacks Club Committee of 1963 (pg 49 of our Centenary Book).
