ANNIVERSARY: We remember this week the first anniversary of the death of former Club President, Fr. Micheal Galvin, who died on the 23rd August 2010.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our next competitive game is in round 9 of the Co. League when we travel to Gallarus to play An Ghaeltacht. While the fixture hasn’t been confirmed as we write it is likely to go ahead on Saturday week (3rd Sept). In the meantime we are due to play Carbery Rangers in a Challenge game in Connolly Park on this Saturday (27th Aug) at 2.30pm.
SENIOR HURLING: Kenmare 2-13; Austin Stacks 1-4.
It was one of those evenings. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong.
At half time in the final of the South Kerry League played in Glenflesk on last Wednesday evening (17th Aug) we trailed by 2-7 to 0-3.
If we converted the nine wides that we had in that half (and on another day we would put them over with our eyes closed) then you can see what the score would be.
In fact we went into a two points lead when Ronan Gilsenan pointed from a free, following a foul on Francie McLoughlin and Ronan Doherty pointed from play inside the first five minutes. Kenmare got their first point in the 6th minute and took the lead for the first time in the 16th minute (0-3 to 0-2). By the 21st minute they led by 1-5 to 0-2. A minute later David Wallace’s puck-out found Ronan Gilsenan and he pointed from distance for our third and final point of the half. We fared no better in the second half scoring just one more point half way through the half when Ronan Doherty was on target again. The game was moving into the final minute when Jim McCathy’s low free from the half way line was steered to the net by Danny Maguire.
Team: David Wallace, David Field (Capt), Damien McCarthy, Gearoid Carmody, Jim McCarthy, Peter O’Regan, Andrew Morrissey, Ronan Gilsenan (0-2 – 1 free), Kieran McCaughley, Michael O’Leary, Danny Maguire (1-0), Andrew Foley, Francie McLoughlin, Ronan Doherty (0-2), John McCarthy.
Subs: Paul Daly (ht), Paudie Bradley (46m), Luke Donnelly (47m), Brian Shanahan (51m). No new fixtures have been confirmed as we write.
U21 FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 5-15; An Ghaeltacht 0-9.
We advanced to the quarter final stage of the Co. Club Championship with a good win over An Ghaeltacht at Connolly Park on last Tuesday week (16th Aug).
Three first half goals by David Mannix (10m), Ciaran O’Connell (18m) and Fiachna Mangan (23m) saw us ahead at half time by 3-5 to 0-6.
In the second half we went on to score 2-10 to three points for the opposition, our two goals coming from Shane Carroll (39m) and Fiachna Mangan (44m), his second of the game. Team: Barry Galvin, Shane Fitzgerald, Sean Purcell, Denis O’Neill, Seamus Bastible, Ronan Shanahan, Alan Crean, Wayne Gutherie, Fearghal MacNamara, Thomas Moore (0-1), Fiachna Mangan (2-0), Ciaran O’Connell (1-0), Shane Carroll (1-6 – 3 frees), Don Quinn, David Mannix (1-4). Subs: Shane Crowley (23m) (0-1), Alan Duggan (40m) (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin (47m), David Courtney (47m) (0-1), Padraig Breen (48m) (0-1). We were due to play Kerins O’Rahillys in the quarter final on Tuesday evening (23rd Aug), too late for inclusion in this week’s Notes.
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: John Mitchels 3-10; Austin Stacks 2-11.
We exited the Molyneaux Cup at the quarter final stage going down to Mitchels in Boherbee on last Friday evening (19th Aug).
We have often heard of the game of two halves. Well you could term this one the game of four quarters. At the end of the first quarter we led by 0-3 to 0-0 (Ronan Shanahan, Joey O’Connor and Padraig Breen on target). During the second quarter Mitchels scored 3-7 to 0-0. In the third quarter it was three points each and in the final quarter we scored 2-5 to 0-0. The two Davids – Mannix and Clifford started the come back in the second half with the former scoring three points and Cliffy scoring 1-2. Paul Barrett coming up from wing back also pointed. Our second goal, with three minutes of normal time remaining, was blasted low to the corner of the net by Paddy Fitzgibbon.
This left us just four points in arrears (after being down fifteen points, five minutes into the second half). Three minutes of added time was played and in that time Denis McElligott, with two points, reduced the deficit to two and we were in the attack in the Mitchels square when the final whistle sounded and after a brave effort we just fell short in the end. Team: Jonathan Conway (Capt), Padraig Lynch, Seamus Bastible, Shane Fitzgerald, Alan Crean, Sean Purcell, Des Fitzgerald, Gearoid McCann, Ronan Shanahan (0-1), Padraig Breen (0-1), Denis McElligott (0-2), Joey O’Connor (0-1 free), Thomas Moore, St. John Hegarty, Dale Counihan. Subs: Shane Carroll (25m), Paul Barrett (25m) (0-1), David Mannix (25m) (0-3 – 1 free), David Clifford (ht) (1-2), Paddy Fitzgibbon (44m) (1-0).
JUNIOR C FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-9; St. Pats 1-7.
Our C team have advanced to the semi final of the Barrett Cup, courtesy of a two points win against St. Pats at Connolly Park last Friday evening (19th Aug).
