Club Notes 7th June, 2016.

June 7, 2016 By Martin Collins

ROCKIE NIGHT AT THE DOGS: The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is the place to be on this Friday night (10th June) for our annual Night at the Dogs Fundraiser. Our thanks to our Organising Committee who have done trojan work during the past few weeks under the stewardship of Club Chairman, Liam Lynch and to everyone who have supported the event with their generous contributions.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Killarney Legion  0-9; Austin Stacks 1-8.

After a rather fractious affair our Seniors got back to winning ways in glorious sunshine at Derreen on last Saturday evening (4th June) in round 4 of the Co. League.

After twenty minutes we had a lead of 1-4 to 0-1 when a straight red card reduced us to 14 men. Three points by team captain, Shane O’Callaghan and a goal and a point (free) by David Mannix were our scorers at that stage, and before half time Darragh O’Brien added another to leave us ahead by 1-5 to 0-1 at the break.

Twelve minutes into the second half we lost another player to a second yellow and with seven minutes to go we were down to twelve men after a third player received a second yellow. This of course did have an effect on the game, as the opposition out-scored us by 0-8 to 0-3 during this half and we could have gone behind at one stage but for a brilliant save by keeper, Darragh O’Brien. But we held out for a well-deserved two points victory. Our three second half points came from Shane O’Callaghan (2) and Darragh O’Brien.

It was good to see some experienced players making their first starts of the season  – John Dennis, Mikey Collins and Darragh O’Brien (all three had been introduced as subs in recent games) and good too to see Barry Shanahan and Brían Mangan on the starting 15.  And finally it was good to see Greg Horan back on the sideline after his operation last week.

Team: Darragh O’Brien, Fearghal MacNamara, Ronan Shanahan, John Dennis, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea, Conor Jordan, Brían Mangan, Barry Shanahan, Daniel Bohan, Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-5 – one free), Mikey Collins, David Mannix (1-1 – one free), David O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Brien (0-2).

Subs used: Fiachna Mangan (30+1m), Seán Ryan (40m-58m blood sub – full sub at 59m); Barry Walsh (51m).

The week-end results leave Dr. Crokes and newly-promoted Templenoe on full points (eight) after the first four rounds – with Dingle, Kerins O’Rahillys and ourselves coming next on six points each.  The round 5 game between ourselves and Rahillys, originally fixed for next week-end, will take place at a later date as both teams will be involved in the Mick O’Dwyer Tournament at the week-end (see next item).

THE MICK O’DWYER PERPETUAL TROPHY TOURNAMENT; takes place in South Kerry at the weekend to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of the greatest footballers/team managers of all time. Micko turns a young looking 80 on this Thursday (9th June) and we all wish you a very happy birthday Micko and thank you and your organizing committee for your kind invitation to participate in the tournament, along with seven other teams.

The four quarter finals and two semi finals will take place on Saturday at Waterville and Dromid. Quarter finals one and two at 11am (we play St. Marys in Dromid in one of these), with the third and fourth quarters at 12.30pm. Semi final one will be at 4pm in Waterville (if we win our quarter final bout we will be in this first semi) with the second semi at 5.30pm in Dromid. The final will take place in Waterville on Sunday at 2pm.

B FOOTBALL: Castlegregory 3-10; Austin Stacks 1-4.

Our B team had to give way to a very good Castlegregory side in round 4 of the Co. League (Div 5), played in Castlegregory last Saturday evening (4th June). The win puts Castle on top of the League, along with Rathmore B and Cordal (all on 6 points), while we find ourselves in 10th spot (on 2 points from our four games) with only Ballyduff and Cromane below us.

We are due to play Tuosist (4th in the table with 5 points) in Connolly Park on this coming Sunday afternoon at 2pm.

SENIOR HURLING: The Co. League (Div. 3) is set to get underway on this Wednesday evening (8th June), We are due to play St. Pats (East Kerry) in the opening round in Connolly Park at 7pm.

U21 FOOTBALL: The first round of the Co. Championship has been fixed for Wednesday evening fortnight (22nd June).  We have a home game against a Rathmore/Kilcummin combination at 7pm.

MINOR FOOTBALL; Our Minors have drawn Kenmare District in the opening round of this season’s Co. Championship. The game is scheduled to take place in Connolly Park on Wednesday, 6th July at 7pm.

Our U17s, received a walk-over from St. Brendans last week-end in the ‘Non Exam’ League.

The semi finals have been fixed for this Friday evening (10th June) at 7pm. We play St. Kierans in Connolly Park while the second semi final goes ahead at the same time in Farranfore when Firies take on West Kerry.
