This round 2 game of the South Kerry League played at Connolly Park last Friday evening was a classic example of ‘a game of two halves.
In the first half Luane Rangers scored 2-3 (that’s 9 points) to one for us (a John McCarthy ’65). In the second half we scored nine points and we held the opposition scoreless.
After a rather listless first half whatever team mentors Brian Shanahan and Pat Murphy said at the interval paid dividends in the second half. At the start of the second half Liam Cleary and John Connolly swopped positions and eight minutes into the half Ger Scollard was introduced.
Another team that found themselves down eight points at half time would have thrown in the towel. But not these lads. Point by point we cut into the oppositions lead.
John McCarthy, as usual, lead the way with scores from frees and play. His point in the 49th minute which brought us level for the first time was superb, not only in its excetution, but because of the equisite pass from the the ever reliable Peter O’Regan. Liam Cleary, Dylan Crean and Ger Scollard (2) were also on target.
One minute into injury time it was another John McCarthy free that put us ahead for the first time in the game and even though the Killorglin side had one last opportunity the were just wide with their effort.
Apart from those mentioned the display of our back line especially in that second half was outstanding with Kevin O’Leary and David Field excelling, but Kieran McCaughlry’s display all over the pitch was superb all through.
Team (13 aside): Liam Cleary (0-1), David Field, Peter O’Regan (Capt), No left back, Kevin O’Leary, Jim McCarthy, Ger Meehan, John McCarthy (0-6 – 4 frees), Kieran McCaughley, Dylan Crean (0-1), Trevor Barrett, Kenneth O’Sullivan, No right forward, John Connolly, Thomas Meehan.
Sub: Ger Scollard (38m) (0-2).
