Club Notes 11 May

May 11, 2010 By Austin Stacks Admin

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Currow 1-8; Austin Stacks 0-8.
Round 3 of the Co. League played in Currow last Sunday afternoon (9th May) saw us suffer our second defeat in this season’s competition.
After turning in a great first half performance, at the end of which we lead by 0-7 to 0-5, we never showed up for the second half, scoring only one point in that final thirty minutes.
In that first half Currow lead by three points after just five minutes. David Mannix opened our account in the 9th minute with a pointed free to be followed by two from play by Graham O’Connell and wing back Paul Barrett.
Currow went back in the lead again in the 13th minute and then two minutes later we were unlucky not to concede a goal but Pa McCarthy was on hand to snap up the loose ball. Pa raced up field and with a perfect pass found David Mannix. David was equally sharp to find Graham O’Connell who equalised.
Then in the 19th minute Shane Carroll gave us the lead for the first time with a well converted forty five.
Currow were back on level terms two minutes later but we finished the half the stronger adding two more points from play by Graham and Shane again.
We were still those two points in front at the end of the third quarter (0-8 to 0-6) – our solitary point coming in the 38th minute from Mikey Collins.
What turned out to be the winning score came in the 47th minute when the opposition broke up field to score the only goal of the game. Currow added two quick points and unbelievably neither side scored in the last thirteen minutes of the game.
Team: Martin Moriarty, Pa McCarthy, Barry Shanahan (Capt), John Dennis, Paul Barrett (0-1), Sean Purcell, Denis Costello, Gearoid McCann, William Kirby, Shane Carroll (0-2 – 1 ’45), Michael Collins (0-1), Padraig McCannon, David Mannix (0-1 free), Graham O’Connell (0-3), David Clifford.
Subs: Fiachna Mangan (43m), Wayne Gutherie (43m), Tommy Costelloe (53m).
Round 4 of the Co. League goes ahead on this Saturday evening (15th May) when we entertain Castleisland Desmonds at Connolly Park. Throw in 7.30.
In the draw for the Co. Championship, which was made last Saturday (8th May) we have been paired against Ardfert, a repeat of the Club Championship tie which was played a few weeks ago.
This will be the first meeting of the two Club teams in this competition. The game will be played on the weekend of 12th/13th June.
CLUB GYM: Please note that the Gym will not be open to members until 5pm for one week beginning on Monday next 17th May. The hall is being used for examinations from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
We wish to apologise for any inconvenience that the restricted opening hours might cause.
SENIOR HURLING: Dr. Crokes 4-11; Austin Stacks 4-8.
We were defeated by a slender margin in round 1 of the South Kerry League played at Lewis Road last Monday (10th May).
Team: David Wallace, David Field, Paudie Bradley, Pat Murphy, Kevin O’Leary, Peter O’Regan, Damien McCarthy, Ronan Gilsenan (0-2), Kieran McCaughley, Rory Moore (1-1), John McCarthy 1-4 frees), Paul Daly, Trevor Barrett (1-0), George Jordan, Ger Scollard (0-1).
Sub: Rick O’Halloran (1-0).
We were to be playing in the 2009 South Kerry JH Championship final on this coming Saturday but (surprise, surprise) the semi final between Kenmare and Kilgarvan did not go ahead as scheduled last Saturday (9th May).
Our next game is in round 2 of the 2010 South Kerry League on next Wednesday (19th May) when we entertain Kenmare in Connolly Park at 7.30.
ANNIVERSARY: We remember at this time our Club colleague Andrew McAllen on the first anniversary of his untimely death (to day 12th May).
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-7; Milltown-Castlemaine 1-7.
Our B team began the defence of their Co. League title with an impressive three points win at Connolly Park last Friday evening (7th May).
Team: Jamie Kelly, Seamus Bastible, Nessan Crean, Shane Fitzgerald, Tommy Costelloe, David Leonard, Ronan Shanahan, Brian O’Sullivan, Brian Mangan (0-1), Don Quinn (0-4), Paul Hennebery, Dale Counihan (0-1), Joey Kinsella (2-1), David Hennebery, Thomas Moore.
Sub: Anthony Morrisson (40m).
We travel to Killarney on this Friday evening (14th May) to play Dr. Crokes in round 2. Throw in 7.30.
JUNIOR C FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-8; Laune Rangers 0-10.
Our C team likewise got their Co. League campaign off to a winning start with a narrow one point win in Killorglin last Friday evening (7th May).
The home side lead by a point at half time (0-4 to 0-3) – our three scores coming from Nicky O’Connell, David Courtney and Pecker Doyle.
The second half was equally as tight. Rangers went further ahead inside the second minute of the resumption. However points by our centrefield partnership of Nicky O’Connell and Darragh O’Brien plus another by Pecker Doyle saw us back in the lead after ten minutes (0-6 to 0-5).
Then a minute later Minor footballer Michael Godley burst through the Rangers defence and his perfect shot across the square was met by full forward Robert Powell who fisted first time to the net.
The final quarter saw the home side edge back into the game where they outscored us by five points to two – our two scores coming in the 49th and 58th minutes from David Courtney and Sean Power.
But we held out for a well deserved victory.
Team: Barry Galvin, David Kelliher, Eoin McMahon, Denis O’Neill, Kenneth Leahy, John O’Connor, Alan Crean, Nicky O’Connell (0-2), Darragh O’Brien (0-1), Sean Power (0-1), David Pecker Doyle (0-2), Michael Godley, David Courtney (0-2), Robert Powell (1-0), Frankie Murphy.
We have a home game in round 2 against Rathmore on this Friday evening (14th May) with a 7.30 start.
MINOR FOOTBALL: Best of luck to the Kerry Minors (including our own Fearghal MacNamara, who lines out at left corner back) as they take on Limerick in the Munster MF semi final in Newcastlewest on this Wednesday evening (12th May) at 7.
ROCK GOLF SOCIETY: The next Outing of the Society is to Kenmare GC on this Saturday (15th May) for our President’s Prize.
FAME – THE MUSICAL: Caherslee’s Caoimhe Garvey continues to impress in RTE’s ‘Fame – the Musical’ series.
Caoimhe successfully negiotated another hurdle in last Sunday’s show.
As we know her continued success in the competition is dependent on votes received from viewers’ texts.
So she would welcome your continuing support on this Sunday evening (6.30 to 7.30 and again from 8.30 to 9.00).
WEBSITE: Visit our website at www.austinstacks.ie.
