AS 5-17 Milltown 2-10
Fitzgerald Stadium,
Oct 3rd 4pm
We got our Kerry Senior Football Championship campaign off to the perfect start with an impressive victory over Milltown/Castlemaine in Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In glorious sunshine in Killarney, the Rockies turned in a powerful all-round performance, hitting five goals on their way to a deserved win and a place in the next round.
It was fantastic to see Ben back in Black and Amber and he, finished with four excellent points from play and his speed and direct running caused problems for the Milltown/Castlemaine defence for the hour.
Paddy Lane led the scoring with 1-7 and looked sharp throughout, while Jack Murphy was outstanding from half-back and capped a fine display with a brilliant second-half goal. Joe O’Connor and Cian Purcell also found the net, with Purcell finishing the day with 2-0, one coming from the spot.
We were lethargic in the opening quarter but Paddy’s goal helped us open up a 1-12 to 0-5 lead at the break having played with a significant wind.
Milltown reduced the deficit with a penalty early in the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. Jack Murphy burst through to hammer home a class goal before Joe added a third to leave the result beyond doubt.
The introduction of fresh legs allowed us to get stronger as the game went on and Cian Purcell struck twice in the closing stages, including a penalty, to complete the scoring.
There was also time for a fine save from Michael Tansley to deny a late goal chance at the other end as the Rockies rounded off an excellent afternoon’s work.
Well done to players and management on a strong start, and thanks as always to the travelling Stacks support who got behind the team in Killarney.
