AS Club Senior Notes 28th Sept

Our County Championship last 16 match against Milltown Castlemaine takes place this Saturday at 4pm in Fitzgerald Stadium.

Austin Stacks B Team rounded off a fantastic season in style with an impressive victory in the Molyneaux Cup Final against Dr Crokes on Sunday.

The Rockies were the better side for long stretches of the contest and, despite a late fightback from Crokes, were deserving winners on the day.

Playing against the breeze in the opening half, Stacks made a strong start and led 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval. A key moment arrived in the tenth minute when the outstanding Ben Quilter produced a superb penalty save to keep our advantage intact. The team played with great energy throughout the half, with defenders Fionnán Ryan, Pádraig O’Halloran and Paul O’Sullivan all surging forward to contribute valuable scores.

Captain David Mannix took centre stage early in the second half, landing two excellent two-pointers along with another score to help double Stacks’ lead and put them firmly in control with 20 minutes remaining.

Dr Crokes responded strongly and reduced the deficit to a single score with ten minutes to play, but resilient defending from Ruairí O’Connell and Seán Óg Brosnan helped Stacks withstand the pressure during a tense spell.

The strength in depth available to the side proved decisive in the closing stages. Gavin, Alex and the Bastible brothers all made a major impact from the bench, bringing fresh energy when it was needed most. Cormac’s cheeky lobbed goal following a flowing team move effectively sealed the victory, before Adam Curran’s superb two-pointer put the finishing touches on a memorable win.

Colm Browne, Luke Casey and Jordan Kissane were among a number of players to deliver powerful performances, but this was above all a superb collective effort from our team.

Congratulations to all players and management on a tremendous season, one that also saw the us secure promotion in the County League. The future looks bright.

Our C team had a very disappointing defeat in the County Final after a cracker of a game in Ballymac. Cordal started fastest and got the opening goal but we took over from there with Ben Kitchener and Enda Cahill outstanding at midfield. We lead by 6 at half time after goals from captain Joe, Richard Hurley and a Pat Mac penalty. Our second half wasn’t as impressive and credit to Cordal they kicked some spectacular 2 pointers. They bombarded us with high balls and we struggled to cope with them. David Courtney and Barry Shanahan were a constant threat and the game could have gone either way, but well done to Cordal. The end of the game was marred by a serious injury to Gearoid Sheehan, who was taken from the field on a stretcher. Everyone in the club wishes Gearoid well in his recovery and we look forward to seeing him back in black and amber again soon.
