AS Club Notes – September 7th

Austin Stacks v Rathmore
By Tim Slattery
Date: 05/09/26
Venue: Fitzgerald Stadium
Throw In 5-25pm
Stacks were defeated for the second year in a row against Rathmore in the  Quarter-Final of the Club Championship after a gripping encounter.
Stacks opened the scoring with a Conor Horan two pointer free and within a minute Alan Dineen had Rathmore back in front when he drilled a low shot to the back of the net.
Dylan Casey had Stacks level on six minutes when he fisted over the bar and straight from the kick out Ryan O’Driscoll was at the end of a good move when he palmed it over the bar when a goal looked on.
Fionn Murphy and Ronan Carroll traded points on eight minutes only for James Darmody to kick the equaliser a minute later followed by a Ryan O’Driscoll point three minutes later.
Cathal Ryan had Rathmore back in front with first two pointer which was quickly cancelled out by Conor Horan’s second two pointer free from a difficult enough angle.
Dylan Casey from a Daniel Kirby pass made it a two point game with nineteen minutes gone on the clock but within a minute Fionn Murphy had his second point.
Daniel Kirby had a fine Stacks point and at the other end Michael Tansley denied Rathmore a certain goal when he produced a great save.
Joe O’Connor had a great chance of a Stacks goal after an exchange of passes when his palmed effort hit the post a let off for Rathmore.
Ciaran Collins with a pointed free closed the scoring before the interval
Half Time Austin Stacks 0-10 Rathmore 1-6
Andrew Moynihan with a point made it all aboard three minutes into the second half.
Conor Horan with two pointed frees after fouls on Michael O’Donnell and Daniel Kirby made it a two point game.
Alan Dineen with a fine two pointer for Rathmore made it all square but within a minute Ronan Carroll with his second point had the Rockies back in front after forty minutes.
Conor Horan made it a two point game from a free after Joe O’Connor was fouled going through.
Mark Ryan with Rathmore’s third two pointer levelled the match and Sub Brian Friel had them in front midway through the half.
Substitute Greg Horan levelled the match and within two minutes Cathal Ryan kicked a point to leave Rathmore ahead with eight minutes left.
Paddy Lane introduced earlier made it all square from a free after Michael O’Donnell was fouled.
Stacks went looking for the winner and after a patient build up Paddy Lane’s effort went to the right and wide.
From the kick out Rathmore worked the ball down field and Brian Friel found Paul Murphy who sent the ball straight between the posts for a dramatic winner.

Molyneaux Cup Round 1
Sunday 6th September Connolly Park 12pm
Austin Stacks 0-15
Dingle 0-9
Our B team produced an impressive performance in blustery conditions against a strong Dingle side to get their Molyneaux Cup campaign off to a winning start.
The game was effectively won during a six-minute spell in the second quarter when David Mannix, fresh off the plane from Australia, kicked four superb two-pointers (three frees and one from play) with the aid of the wind to put us in a commanding position. Those scores helped us build a 0-11 to 0-3 lead by half-time.
Dingle battled hard to close the gap in the second half and, were it not for a number of excellent saves from goalkeeper Ben Quilter, the finish could have been far more nervy. At midfield, Dave Fitzmaurice and Colm Browne both delivered outstanding performances and were instrumental in steadying the ship when Dingle mounted a second-half surge. Padraig O’Halloran in the full-back line, Adam Curran at centre-back and Jordan Kissane also turned in strong displays as part of an excellent overall team performance.
We were able to field a strong side, with several senior panellists providing a solid backbone to the team. They blended well with the group that secured promotion to Division 4 of the County League earlier in the year. If we can continue to field teams of this calibre throughout the competition, we should be firmly in contention.
Well done to all the players and management on an excellent start to the campaign.
