Bs go one step closer to promotion
By Tim McMahon
County League Divison 6 Round 9
Firies 1-10 Austin Stacks B 3-5
Our Bs pulled off a fine victory in Firies on Sunday afternoon in a hard fought top of the
table clash in Firies.
The odds on victory were stacked against us as we lined out with a squad of only 16
with a number of cry offs on Sunday morning and we fell behind to an early goal. We
responded well and a goal for Jay OConner kept us in touch. Our full experienced full
back line of John Murphy, Ruairi O’Connell and Tom McLoughlin was solid all day and
with the brilliant Paul OSullivan providing the link to attach we settled into the game.
Scores were added from Shane Bastible, Leon Sweeney, Jake Carmody (2pter) and
another goal from the penalty spot by the inspirational Pat McCarthy to give us a two
point lead at the break 2-5 to 1-6.
Playing against the wind we needed to sacrifice keeper Oliver Lata ten minutes into the
2nd half to the A squad and selector Seamus Bastible stepped in between the posts.
Brendan Caball and Jayden Moriarty were instrumental in the pivotal moment of the
game when Sean Moynihan poked the ball to the net for our only score of the 2nd half.
From there on it was a rearguard action, led by the tenacious half backs Leon Sweeney
and Ryan McMahon and player of the season Ben Kirchner. Veteran John Dennis also
coming on to steady ship late on for a heroic one point victory.
This result puts us at the top of the division along with Ballylongford with two games
remaining versus Glenflesk and Kilcummin.
