Senior Hurling Co. Final: Killarney 2-6; Austin Stacks 2-5 on 2nd November, 1969.
The event was already celebrated a few weeks ago during the Co. SH Final at Austin Stack Park but it was on this date, 50 years ago, that our Hurlers contested that season’s Final only to lose by the narrowest of margins to a very good Killarney side (2-6 to 2-5). John Barry’s (who played at centre back in that final and who was also team captain that year) Report in our Centenary Book (pages 128-130) is well worth reading again where he captures vividly that game and the games leading up to that final which include brilliant victories in both the quarter final against Lixnaw (5-13 to 3-8) and in the semi final against Ballyduff (7-7 to 4-6). John said that we were such certainties in that Final that champagne was lying on a shelf in the Anchor Bar ready to be opened. John’s article continued – ‘the champagne was opened alright but never was champagne drunk in a more depressive atmosphere. One thing after another went wrong in the game and we wound up losing by a point as we did in the final the previous year.’
