JACKIE POWER: All in the Club and in the wider community were saddened to learn this morning of the death of Jackie Power after a long illness. Jackie and his family have been involved with the Club since his late father Jackie Snr. came to this Town from his native Limerick almost 70 years ago. Jackie Jnr. was part of the great Rock teams of the 1970s and 1980s but before that he had a very successful career with the Juveniles both in Hurling and Football, culminating in that great Minor Hurling Co. Championship win in 1967.
He made his SF Championship debut in that iconic game in ‘muddy Moyvane’ on the 15th September 1974. For the next eleven seasons (1974-1984) he was a vital cog in many victories by the Club in that second Golden Era. He played 26 Co. Championship games – winning three Co. Championship medals (1975, 1976 and 1979) as well as a Munster Club Championship medal in 1976 and an All Ireland Club Championship medal in 1977. In addition he won six Co. Leagues between 1974 and 1982. In one of those Co. Championship finals – the 1976 one against Kenmare in Killarney – he is credited with scoring the fastest goal in a final – scoring the only goal of the game just thirty seconds after the throw-in.
With his playing days over he mentored many Rock teams down the years, including our Minors (2000), Under 21s (2002-2004) and our B team (2003). His wife Noreen has been involved with our Lady Footballers since their establishment in the late 1970s and has been Austin Stacks Ladies Club Chairperson for many years. His son Seán has played and mentored teams for many years and recently lined out again with the newly reformed C Team. His daughters Deirdre, Gráinne and Siobhán have all been involved in various Club activities down the years to this present day. Jackie’s grand daughter Chloe plays with our U12 girls and his young grandsons Mattise & Theo are both members of our juvenile academy.
We extend sincere sympathy to Jackie’s family – to his wife Noreen, his son Seán, daughters Deirdre, Gráinne and Siobhán, his brothers David and Ger, his sisters, Eleanor (Kelliher), Breeda (McNamara), Sheila (Patel), his grandchildren and all his extended family and friends. RIP Jackie
