GARY FERNANE.
It was on this date (30th Sept 1994) 25 years ago that Gary Fernane (father of our current Chairperson, Mairéad) died. Gary was President of our Juvenile Club at that time and was one of our most dedicated and loyal supporters, regularly attending games both at Juvenile and Senior level. When his own son, Gary, died at the young age of 40 in February 1985 Gary Snr. presented a Cup in his honour which was contested by our Under 8 players down the years. Gary Snr’s death occurred in the midst of our Senior team preparation for that season’s Co. Final against Dr. Crokes. Just over three weeks before he passed away he attended his last game – a SF Co. League game in Annascaul (3rd Sept) and was so pleased later that month when our U13s won the Lee Strand Tournament and on the same day our Seniors defeated East Kerry in the Co. Championship semi final. So it was on the minds of most Club members when, after a replay, our Seniors brought the Bishop Moynihan Cup back to the Rock later that October – a fitting tribute to one of the great Club mentors and supporters of his day.
